Autospeed article about VW's 1L car

Quality Autospeed article.. Not new (first published in 2002, according to the attribution). But still an interesting and comprehensive background of the vehicle:

The World's Most Fuel-Efficient Car
Technology beyond your wildest dreams.

(I'm still always surprised at how seeing the driver in pics of the car snaps it into a different scale than it appears to be when the cockpit is empty. It's a REALLY small car.)

Very interesting article. Just to clarify for those who don't bother to read the article, the "1L car" doesn't mean a 1L engine. The engine is only 0.3L. The 1L refers to a fuel consumption of 1L/100km or 235 mpg US.

Pretty neat, automatic EOC :

The automated gearbox is coupled to a start-stop system, which includes a freewheel function. In overrun mode, the vehicle switches the engine off. The vehicle then rolls without the engine running. Development engineers call this gliding - alluding to the silent flight of a glider.
Besides the 1L, are there any other aluminum-(mono?)-block diesel engines that were made for cars?

Hi,

They actually averaged about 0.89L /100km, so the mileage was ~317mpg -- and it could be called the 0.9L Car!

Gas 2.0 (our own Ben Jones?) says VW will be selling it in 2010 -- lets hope so!

This thing is so awesome. Theres no way they will ever sell it to the public though, especially not in 2010. Don't get your hopes up.
The weight saving techniques used in its construction make it only a one off design.

Does it have a windshield wiper??

The 1ND-TV in my yaris is an alloy block. Not mono though. I guess it's too radical.
It's in a few cars:Toyota ND engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
No haynes manuals for it though. Grrr!

That looks really cool. Very small and compact car. Is this just a concept car? I am thinking that the parts for this particular car is hard to find. I doubt that this will come out soon.

Well - with extensice use of magnesium and titanium, the car will never se production as it is now. It would be far to expensive.

But the concept show the possibilities when FE is the ultimate goal, and every tiny part of the car is designed with best FE in mind.

In my mind, something like this will come on the marked sooner or later, but in order to keep cost down, cheaper, and heavier materials will by used, but certainly af 2 liter (100 km on 2 liters) should easily be within reach.

1 liter pr. 100 km = 235 mpg (us)

2 liter pr. 100 km = 117,5 mpg (us)

They have updated it, and made it less expensive, and more practical (read: faster).

Of course, it is now a 1.38L car... Which is still incredibly good FE.
