Average Speeds (post it if you got it)
I've kept track of my average speeds for quite a while now. My truck has a hour trip meter that I use for each tank. It runs whenever the key is on. I've posted my average speeds for quite a while in my fuel log.
My average has been between 25 & 31 mph for most tanks. Several people have been shocked at those numbers, but I think that sounds lower than it is. I suspect most people's average speed is lower than they think it is because they think of their average cruising speed, which is much higher than average speed. So to all my fellow ecomodders out there, post your average speeds if you keep track of them. Not what you think it is, but your actual numbers (over at least a full tank). I suspect most "commuters" are well under 40 mph, but maybe I'm wrong. FYI, the EPA city cycle has an average speed of 21.2 mph, the highway has an average of 48.3 mph. Even the average of the new "high speed" cycle is 48.4 mph. See details here: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml |
21 mph mostly commuting. Speed limits are 35, 45 and 55 mph, with ~1 stop sign / light per mile.
* until I go past a certain number of hours on the tank and the Scangauge freaks out. It rolls the hours over to zero and says I've averaged 119 mph! :p |
aprox. 25 mph in my commute. 30% city, 70% hway
And yes, most people think that they average is higher than the real! |
23 mph on my last tank, and it doesn't vary much from there that I've seen. I tend to drive a lot of secondary/rural roads with 45 or 55 mph limits, but I work downtown, and have a lot of lights and stop signs to contend with there.
Edit - I am a courier, so the bulk of my driving is not commuting, it's short trips around the county, between 1 and 10 miles, very little on the highway. |
Typical 73 mile mostly highway trip in 1 hour 36 minutes gives an average speed of 45 MPH. Highest speed limit is 55 MPH.
Typical 3 mile commute to work in 8 minutes = 22 MPH. Mostly 35 MPH speed limit, 3 stop signs. |
According to my Scangauge, a typical tank in Helga averages out to about 39mph. If I drive more often, the avg speed drops; if my wife drives more often, it goes up. :) Obviously more freeway time bumps it up even more (though it normally also bumps the tank FE).

Average tank speed is between ~35 km/h (22 mph) for pure city driving, and ~55 km/h (35 mph) for mostly long distance trips. My highest trip average speed was 80 km/h (50 mph).

But my average speed is usually in the 30's and really only changes if I work a lot because that means a lot of city driving. |
I average about 26-28 mph communting to work. 9 miles each way. All back roads no highway. 30, 35,and 40 mph speed limits along the way.

My low average is 35, high is just over 40. If I take a road trip it usually works out to low to mid 50s. One trip to DC I averaged 70 on the Interstate and still managed 25 MPG in the wife's Murano.
My local commute is 20 miles in just under 35 minutes, consistently for many years. If I hop on the Interstate for half of the same distance I can cut 5 minutes off the same ride. regards Mech |
