Baby Ninja Testing
OK, so it's a 01 250 Ninja with a Suzuki GN125 engine. Rides great, but working on top speed issues due to interstate commute. 65mph (indicated), new gearing & gps are installed for this weekend's test run. MPG unknown...

That conversion sounds like a job and a half. Did you do it yourself? Good luck with your testing. |
Conversion not too bad bdesj, going fron a liquid twin to an air cooled single was easier than most. Had to make a few things here and there but all worked out. Turns out with all the changes the speedo is within 1+/- Gps speed. Top speed slowed to 60.3 with new gearing; will be freshening up the motor and tuning for next weeks run.

Did you do an overhaul to the engine before installing it or any other modifications?
Also, don't interstate highways require that motorcycles be at least 250cc or larger? |
Very impresive undertaking, in my book!
Ryland, just guessing here, but I`d say that whatever the law is, if the bike was originally a 250 and still LOOKS like a 250, as long as he isn`t holding up traffic he should be able to get away with a smaller (even technically illegal) engine. I guess we`ll find out. Hope he manages to bump that top speed up in order to cover that "not holding up traffic" clause that I just invented :) |
Wow, that's quite an interesting swap you did there. I'd love to see pictures of the bike!

The smaller engine has been overlooked by almost all, probably do to the multi-color bodywork (this is not a show bike:). No mods were done to the engine before installation, I wanted to see if it was going to be worth persuing before throwing much money at it. Boring the cylinder this week for 11:1 wisco +2mm.

this is going to be a cool thread. i would also love to see bigger pics of the bike and the engine. pretty interesting throwing a 125cc in an older ninja 250. be great for local commute. let us know what the MPG is when you find out.

I have a Honda CB125 and it seems to top out at around 60mph and is around 12hp where your engine appears to be in the 11-11.5hp range in stock form so I wonder if you will get up to 65mph, of course the advantage of the Ninja is that it has light weight wheels and a fairing.
Any idea on the curb weight or any other specs of your bike? |
I would not get on the Interstates here in my 125 CC Eliminator. The Rebel would be fine with 250CC.
