Bad engine/tranny, good body interior 2000 Metro - what to do?

Hi Everyone.

My brother-in-law has a 200 Geo Metro (3-cylinder 5-speed) that has both a bad engine and a bad tranny.

He just bought a Hyundai Accent to replace it.

What should he do with the Metro? (Or, should I offer to take it off his hands?....)

The body is in pretty darn good condition, and the interior is almost perfect.

If the tranny was good, and I didn't already HAVE an electric Geo Metro, I would convert it to an EV in a heartbeat.

These things usually die from rust, or collapsing on it's own control arm mount. 2000 was the last year they made them for non-fleet sales.

Any ideas for the best thing to do with it?

It would take an weekend to drop in a good used engine/tranny combo from a wrecker and donate it/sell it cheap to someone who needs a break. That's if you are feeling in a charitable mood and love to wrench.

I agree with orange4boy. It wouldn't take much to drop a new-used engine in it.

I see a lot more of the Gen 1 Metros for sale on Craigslist than Gen 2s.

Can anyone tell me if the 3 cylinder engines were pretty much all the same between the various years?

Could I put an engine and tranny from a '94 into a 2000 body?

What about the OBD2?

Search Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market for engines for a 2000 metro. There are a bunch in the area.

I would say something at the local electric vehicle club meeting, if that doesn't work then put a new engine and tranny in it.

Hayabusa swap! :D

The older OBDI engines are basically the same. A few things need to be changed. There's a thread on teamswift.net about converting the older engines. Basically changing the oil pump and pan to add the crank angle sensor. And you'll need to reuse the newer intake manifold.

I have a 1997 Geo Metro Rusty as hell and the body wont hold much longer But the engine has only 47,000mi on it it would be great to get a hold of a descent body how much and what location.

1800 years old ? Wow

Good body and bad mechanicals = buy it.

Unfortunately most of my old car buys are the other way round.
