Bajaj Chetak

I have a 2004 Bejaj Chetak that has been sitting in the garage for 10 years.

As part of the long overdue project of clearing and organizing the garage, I hauled it out over the weekend. Battery dead, fuel tank probably full of turpentine. Spark plug is fouled but otherwise fine. Some scratches, a couple minor dents.

What should I do with it if I fail to sell it? Part it out? Convert it to electric? Scrap it?

I didn't even remember there was any Chetak with a battery. Most of the ones that had been exported to Uruguay in the '90s had only a magneto.

This one has even a 12 volt system.

I would get it running, fun transportation for the summertime

Is it 2 or 4 stroke?

IIRC they're all 2-stroke. Well, I assume it would be a little harder to compensate the weight bias if Bajaj started offering a 4-stroke on those, due to the added weight of a valvetrain.

I don't remember if the ones with magnetos still had a 6-volt system or a 12-volt, but the absence of a battery didn't prevent any of them to be used.

It is a 4 stroke. One spark plug. Small lead acid battery of the kind you pour the acid into (that was fun).

After work, in the last light yesterday, I cleaned the spark plug with carb cleaner, steel wool, and a steel brush. Took apart handlebar switch that is not sending a signal to the left directional (it seems). Cleaned it, too. But no improvement in turn signal. Right signal works normally after cleaning--it even has a beeping noise to go with the blinking.

Careful taking apart an Indian-made switch... I got a littkle more "apartness" than I expected.

That's surprising, even though the Bajaj triccycles got presumably the same 4-stroke engine used in your Chetak.

No work on this today, othr than finding my fuel syphon. Last daylight was for garage and car.

Hybrid with a canopy would be cool.

After I saw a video of a Honda CG 125 adapted with the alternator of a Brazilian Volkswagen Gol (not a Golf), a BAS-Hybrid setup into a motorcycle seems to be more doable. Not sure if a Vespa, or by extension a Chetak, would have enough room for that...
