30mpg stock 03 Avalon

When I was a teenager I used to beat the crap out of my car, to the point that I’m surprised my car and I are still alive. Fast forward a few years I’m in my 20s and I’m a little more conscious of my driving habits. Recently I stumbled across this website and was fascinated at the mods and driving techniques used for hypermiling. I figured I’d give it a whirl. For my baseline I’ve been getting between 18 and 24 mpg. After my first fill up I saw an imeadiate increase at 26.5 mpg. I was so excited by this drastic improvement I wanted to push it even farther. For the next tank I filled up my tires to 40psi instead of the normal 35. In addition the the hard tires I also used engine of coasting wherever it was safe to do so down hill, stoplights etc. I drove 296.7 and it only took 9.808 gallons to fill up the tank. Sitting at the gas station I quickly did the math and was astounded when I realized I just squeaked out 30.25 mpg out of my stock 03 Avalon. Granted this was combined city and highway driving I didn’t believe it at first and had to double check the math. I’m very happy with the success I’ve had in such a short time. I think I may have discovered a new hobby.

Congrats! Seeing the control you can have over your fuel economy is always an eye opener.

I do have to wonder if your car is not due for a tune up though. I have a 99 Avalon (With 301,000 miles) and I am sitting right around 32 mpg mixed between highway and city.

Did the Avalon come as a manual? Otherwise you might damage your transmission doing engine off coasting.

Nice MPG though!

Just like trying to build the fastest car around driving for the best fuel efficiency can also become an obsession. Years ago when I'd go on a long road trip I'd see what the shortest length time I could drive it in was, now I see what's the best fuel mileage I can get even if it means adding an extra hour to the drive. I just bought a used 2016 Versa with the CVT about 1.5 months ago and so far I've had a tank at 42.3 MPG and one at 46.0 MPG. According to my onboard mileage calculator and the Ultra Gauge both I'm beating both previous numbers on this tank. Summer time is also coming up so I expect to see those numbers increase over the next few months.

Yup! Seeing the changes you can make just by tweaking your driving habits is what got me hooked.

That's not bad. My nearest analogues would be the '00 Passat wagon my Pa had when I was a teenager. He was by no means a hypermiler, but with its V6 and all wheel drive, we took it skiing often. He would typically get around 28mpg with skis on top, up and down the Sierras, and with cruise usually set to 63mph. Commute driving was closer to 20.

My mother in law has an '06 Volvo V70 with a non-turbo 5-cylinder. I haven't driven it much but it's a low-mid 20s car around town.

Averaging over 30 in the Avalon seems like a good, solid place to me.
