Dynamat

I am driving xB now and always feel the engine noisy, especially on freeway. Also, the cabin is hot in summer and cold in winter. Comparing to my another minivan, Toyota Sienna, it is much warmer in winter and not that hot in summer. I know people using dynamat to minimize road noise and engine nose. It also keep the heat from the engine bay.

Is anyone using dynamat in his/her car? Do you feel the difference in term of cooling and noise? Where you install it and make the most notable difference? Does the extra weight hurt the FE?

I don't know if it reduces the heat that much since my car tends to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

As far as where to put it I took everything out of my car and put it where ever I could. Best choices are to take off the door panels and to put it there. Underneath the carpet in the car and in the trunk. It's pretty much up to your personal preference. I would start at the doors and go from there

I have it from top to bottom on my xB for sound suppression, I know they make a type for engine bays but its function is vibration control not cooling.

Interior noise comes primarily from the wheel wells and the windows. It will help some, but it is heavy, my B has three rolls of the stuff in it each roll weighed 80lbs. The difference shows up in the sound quality, not the ride quality.

So I wouldn't swear by its cooling or quieting properties, but it works exceptionally well in absorbing sound and stereo vibrations.

Do you mind telling me what brand name of the sound suppression material? and how much? I know it can be heavy. That's why I am looking for dynamat Xtreme. Looks like it insulate both sound and heat.

My data is scewed, I used dynamat, the regular kind, I got it in 20' rolls, and didn't pay a whole lot because it was part of a sponsorship agreement with my stereo equipment company. I can tell you this, I lined both inner and outer door skins on my xB and when you knock on the metal it sounds like they are filled with concrete ..lol

So, does it reduce any engine noise and road noise? Where did you put it? doors and floor? Did you put some on engine hood and firewall?

My xB has it on the floors, both sides of the doors, roof, hatch, fender wells (Inside), and any interior metal panel I could get to. I have always combated engine/wind noise with louder music though. Now as I recall behind the carpet on the firewall is either a rubber type mat or an insulated pad which is an uber pain in the ass to remove. And once you commit t it, you have to get it all off or else the mat will not stick to it.

Thanks for your detail description and wonderful pictures. Sounds like the insulation would reduce the panel vibration, which improve the sound system quality, but not reduce road and engine noise level like Camry.

trikkonceptz is right, dynamat will do nothing for you but add weight. I have 2 full rolls of extreme in my infiniti and all that did was add about 150lbs of weight. I thought it would reduce road noise too... it didn't.

Thanks for everyone's opinion and review. I believe I won't spend money on that since it won't give the result I want.
