Better f/e on my '95 Camry....

So far i get 32mpg.I have removed the post-cat,resonator, swapped the stock muffler with a Magnaflow one.If i add a header, that will get rid of the pre-cat.Will that help too? What if i advance the timing some? This car has an automatic trans

Dave,
I was "stuck" at 32 too until I got that cheapo Air Intake.
Also a new front A/F sensor, removed mud flaps, and adjusted wiper blades as low as they would
go on the windshield.

In my experience exhaust mods tend to hurt mileage instead of helping it.
I think the problem is like the air intake, a variable system works best.
Too little back pressure at low rpms hurts mpg. Too open air intake at low rpms same problem.

Today I am going to add one of those "old fashioned" scavenger tips to my 00 Camry.
All it is a muffler tip that angles gently down off the muffler ending below the muffler and cut at a
angle so its opening is parallel to the air flow. This is supposed to create a slight vacuum effect at hwy speeds reducing back pressure. So no change at low rpm, but small decrease in back pressure at hwy speed. That what we did when I was 18! Now, thats like 30 yrs ago and it probably would be debunked by the "Myth Busters" but its cheap, gets exhaust further away from car and cant hurt.

Whenever i had a car with distributor on It always would set the timing at idle to about 10 degrees.

Gen4's have coil packs and static ignition timing is set by the crank shaft position sensor under the timing belt cover.
On Mazda site some members would mod the mount for that
sensor to advance base timing but I have not hear of that on Gen4's on TN.

How much of a difference did you get?

I remember cars had more pep off the line.

When I replace my timing belt I will fiddle with the timing advance on my Gen4.

I would replace the transmission fluid with a pure synthetic lube of the same type as called for in the owner's manual. (I believe that this would be a GL5 spec 75W90 gear lube) This change would improve your gas mileage by a few percent.

Advance the timing and Run it on 91 octane

Now that its warm out I can get to change the gear oil in tranny..

Domman56, my car doesnt have a distributor so only way to advance base timing is to modify the crankshaft position sensor located under the timing belt cover. Something one doesn't remove until the timing belt needs to be changed.

My mileage gains are primarily due to tweaks on the engine and of course the manual transmission. I also added an original aerofoil roof rack specifically designed for the Toyota Scepter - I will post them on TN later on. Now I have started doing undercar modding.
