Biodegradeable Oils = Higher Fuel Efficiency?

Given my interest in Biodiesel, I also found there are some companies making Bio-Based Motor Oil. One of them, Biosynthetics, claims their oil keeps engines cleaner than Petrol oils. No news yet of a Diesel oil from what I read, but I'm sure it's possible.

First Ever Biosynthetic Motor Oil to Receive Highest Industry Performance Certification; Demonstrates Improved Fuel Economy
Biosynthetic Technologies’ Biosynthetic Motor Oil Achieves API SN Resource Conserving Certification, ILSAC GF-5 Certification and a 3.05% Fuel Economy Gain

November 11, 2014 09:00 AM Eastern Standard Time
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Biosynthetic Technologies, a leading manufacturer of renewable high-performance lubricant base oil, announced today that it has received ILSAC GF-5 certification on both SAE 5W-20 and 5W-30 grade passenger car motor oil (PCMO) formulations using its Biosynthetic Base Oil. ILSAC GF-5 represents the latest performance standard set by the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC). These formulations have also been certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) to exceed requirements of the most recent service category issued by API’s Lubricants Group – the API SN “Resourcing Conserving” designation.

A key component of the ILSAC GF-5 designation is demonstrated fuel economy improvement. The fuel economy attributes of Biosynthetic Base Oil is further demonstrated by the results of a recent Mercedes Benz M111 Fuel Economy Test in which a Biosynthetic SAE 5W-30 motor oil formulation achieved a 3.05% fuel economy gain compared to the industry reference oil.

Environmental performance is becoming increasingly important to consumers and regulators alike. Motor oil formulations using base oils that meet the United States EPA’s Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL) standards will certainly benefit motor oil marketers in an increasingly difficult regulatory setting.

Biosynthetic Technologies worked with Infineum, a global leader in the manufacturing and marketing of lubricant and fuel additives, to formulate and test these PCMO formulations. As part of this collaboration, these certified PCMO formulations will be made available to marketers interested in selling ultra-high-performance Biosynthetic motor oils.

Engine test data show these Biosynthetic motor oil formulations achieve piston deposit and wear protection ratings among the highest of any PCMO products currently available in the market, demonstrating that Biosynthetic Base Oils provide performance benefits not attainable with petroleum-based products alone.

“This milestone positions our biodegradable, non-toxic and non-bioaccumulative base oils to make a huge impact in the motor oil sector globally,” says Allen Barbieri, CEO of Biosynthetic Technologies.

“In the past, environmentally friendly lubricants have faced performance questions. We now have extensive, proven results that these Biosynthetic oils can exceed the industry’s toughest standards, as well as the most challenging environmental standards,” continued Mr. Barbieri. “Furthermore, we now have third-party validation from the oil industry’s most trusted certifying bodies that Biosynthetic Base Oils offer the cleanest engine possible and a cleaner environment.”

Lubricant marketers interested in using Biosynthetic Base Oil, or reselling the API certified 5W-20 or 5W-30 motor oil formulations, should contact Bruce Marley, Biosynthetic Technologies’ SVP of Sales & Marketing, at 949-390-5921.

In older news, there's also the "Green Earth" oil. This one's more accessible as of the posting date, (Just Google-Searching "Biodegradeable Motor Oil" shows it) and it's available for purchase at Amazon.com. (Note: They sell other products too, such as cleaners.)

Green Earth Motor Oil:

Also a bit related: I've been using Seventh Generation Dish Soap. It's a biodegradable soap, and I pay in the $2-$4 range per 32 oz. container. It's so good that I need to use very little soap in the dish pan to get a lot of suds; it's almost like the size that water turns into when becoming steam. I actually went four months on one bottle of this, even considering at the end I was adding water to the bottle to get even more use out of it.

EDIT and UPDATE: There are also these companies making Biodegradable oil:

Renewable Lubricants (of which I'm using 5w40 Low Ash Diesel oil as of December 10 2015)

Where did I read this? I was looking into this and got the impression that upon the first so many oil changes using one of these oils it'll increase what appears to be wear particles in the oil but it's not increasing wear, it's just releasing what was suspended in the engine when switching from Petrol oil to Bio oil.

At least they aren't claiming 5-15%. 3% From going to a better oil? Sure it's possible. If I had a spare car to try it in I would, but I don't feel like stranding myself on the side of the road with a blown up engine.

I picked up G oil a while back when it was on a promo sale at Walmart and ran it in my Saturn for 1 OCI. I didn't notice any positive or negative effects from it. I'd run it again if it were given to me but if I'm spending money I'm sticking with motorcraft 5-20 for the Focus.

How big of a deal is the 3.05%? The reference oil in the M111 test looks like a 15w-40 from the 90s. How would a cheap GF-5 / SN oil compare, or a synthetic 0w-30?

Renewable-based oils are a good advance. But what are its feedstocks? Castor? Cotton seed?

Im skeptical, ENTIRELY because they claim they have measured fe gains down to 1/100th of a percent.

That is typical.
We had a post on here a few years ago about the fuel economy advantage of thinner oils.

In your engine? :D ...excellent detergent qualities if no other benefits.
