Boat Tails; Even NASA uses them!

Sweet picture, :)

Seconded.
|
I think they copied someone.

Ah, the fairing. That was originally developed for the Approach and Landing Test series on OV-101, the space shuttle Enterprise. At the time, they were very concerned about the aerodynamically 'dirty' rocket nozzles on the rear fouling airflow to the shuttle carrier aircraft's tail that they developed that as well as installing a custom set of twin alternate vertical stabilizers on the tips of the rear horizontal stabilizers.

Priceless, absolutely priceless!
The first thing I thought of when I read the title was the tail cone on the space shuttle in transport...then I though of basjoos, lol. |
LOL!!!
That is AWSOME Photo Editing !!! |
shuttle boattail
the boattail cone doubled the glide of the Enterprise when dropped over Edward's AFB.Also, when it has to land at Edward's,they always use the cone when ferrying it back to Florida on the 747.Since the 747 consumes a gallon of fuel in less than a body-length,the lesson of the boattails boost in mpg was not lost on the rocket-scientists in charge of the program.

I had to bump this.
