Bought a 2011 Prius. I have no idea how to drive it...
The only car I've ever owned where I cared about MPGs is my Civic. I still have it, and have mastered how to drive it most efficiently.
This Prius however has me fooled. I realize (after only a day mind you) that I have NO IDEA what to do to get better MPG. Granted I don't have a SG for it yet so I'm only relying on the in-car system to tell me what I'm getting. Any suggestions would help! |
This will be easier once you get the Scangauge: Accelerate at 1.1-1.2 GPH to desired speed. With car in ECO mode (which reduces throttle sensitivity and makes it easier to hold throttle position), lift off throttle until the Charge/Eco/Power bar shows nothing--now you're gliding. Rinse and repeat.

This video is a good crash course in milking the Prius for MPGs. |
There is a forum for everything. but for a car this popular and well-known:
priuschat.com priusforum.com priusonline.com forums.edmunds.com/discussions/tagged/toyota/Prius toyotanation.com/forum/62-prius-forum toyotaownersclub.com/forums/forum/52-hybrid-toyota-prius toyota-prius.livejournal.com hybridcars.com/forums/toyota-prius-f3.html ad naseum. I imagine that Prius Chat has all that you need, though. Has anyone installed lean burn on a Prius? :D The last girl that I took out insisted that the Prius only achieved the same fuel economy as an "average car." I had not heard that before and honestly, I hope that I do not hear it again, but people also claim that they only get good fuel economy in the city. My roommate says his father, brother, or hair dresser's dog groomer's neighbor's mailman's politician traded in a Prius because of the mediocre highway economy. If they are so bad on the highway, why do they always go 80 MPH? :) Well, back to my bridge! |
I love when people say hybrids don't get good mileage on the highway. My Prius gets mid-40s at ~75MPH and my Escape hybrid even got 28-30MPG at that speed. It seems like it's always people that have cars that get poor mileage that say it.

Other than that, the normal driving rules apply of timing lights and paying attention to traffic. Quote:

3 advices:
- maximize Devon braking (use eco visage) - keep RPMs down - minimize full stops I seem to be getting best MPG vs drivability with 42/38 psi F/R settings Also "bliping"/depressing accelerator will switch to EV mode. |
