bought a new beater saturn

Yeah, another craigslist find. 1996 SL2 auto :($500, runs solid except for the power steering. It needs inspected and probably needs a new battery because it has been sitting for months. The guy seemed to take good care of it only reason he is selling it is because he bought an Audi tt.

Yes I know its an autotragic. Stick shifts are just hard to come by.

Oooo! So close. Did you buy it because you're in a rush and need wheels to replace the dead car?

Would you consider continuing to shop for a stick and flip this one when you find your ideal wheels?

SVOboy 01-15-2008 09:19 PM

Just hop to the junkyard and convert it to stick, :)
Pictures?

Metro- Well my current car isn't dead it's just dieing. Multiple exhaust leaks and one mystery problem I can't seem to figure out (It is very hard start when warm).

SVO- you know I am too lazy for that. Check the link for bad pictures.

An auto transmission isn't a deal breaker for me. I just hate looking 5 times longer to find a decent stickshift.

Wow that was quick. I guess I can see it because of my history or something.

You might explore the option of disabling your power steering altogether :

Power stearing swap to rack and pinion for saving gas with doch

Here is the easy way :

When it comes down to it, it's your car man do what you want lol.

This is a very easy process and I have done it to my own DOHC swapped SC1. I removed the P/S pump completely and cut the hoses about 1 foot each from the rack. I then filled the hoses with fluid and installed a dual barb fitting and hose clamped each side. I am sure the system has a small amount of air in it but it's not a problem. I worked up a valve to work that better but have yet to put it in lol. I pulled a non P/S, ribbed idler pulley from the junkyard and picked up a new non-A/C,P/S (as my car has both the A/C and P/S deleted) belt from Napa (Kelley Springfield 550K5) and it was done. I have had no problems with it for over a year now.

I also recently yanked a non P/S rack from the yard and may swap that in to try it but the SL rack has a wider steering radius, so we'll see.

Every time I am at the yard, I look for the non P/S pullies while I am there and yank them. If you do it, I suggest the same, buying the aftermarket replacement from autozone or where ever is a plastic part and not metal like the OEM ones.

Anyway, thats my .02

1993 SC1.5

I think the easy thing to do would be to leave the PS pump in place. Just connect the PS Pump hoses in the same way. This way, the PS pump would not incur a load on the engine, would not require a special belt, and would be reversible if you don't like it. However, keep in mind that if you want to reverse it and you want to use Saturn parts, new hoses from Saturn will cost $100 minimum for the pair.

Based on the above, the conversion will be a working but "tougher to turn" manual steering than you could get in an S?1.

This is on my todo list.

Most egg-salad! Keep digging on saturnfans.com and you should find all the info you need. There's a small chance I will get this done within the next two weeks. I need to get backup hoses in case I am not comfortable with how it drives.
