Budget Minded Eco Modder
Hello everyone,
I am new here, and currently attempting to build the highest mpg car possible on a budget. I purchased a 1993 Civic EX Couple for $350, which came with a JDM D15B VTEC-E Engine in it already paired to an S40 VX transmission. I am hoping to achieve 50+ MPG out of the car, however I have ran into a few snags. That being that I do not have the correct engine harness for the motor to run the 5 wire o2 sensor required for the lean-burn function. If anyone happens to have one laying around please contact me! However when i'm not trying to build an MPG monster i race wheel to wheel in NASA Honda Challenge here in the Midwest. Currently in the midst of building a new car that should be the one to beat this year. I am also a licensed instructor through NASA as well as a Professional Instructor for Xtreme Xperience based out of Chicago, IL. So everyone month i get to hop into cars i'll never be able to afford like the Lamborghini Huracan, which is F*CKING FAST!!!! All in all i love cars and i love building cars. Just having troubles finding the parts for an affordable price! Please feel free to hit me up anytime! https://scontent-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...96&oe=55CA91B7 |
Seems I may be in luck, hoping that I am. Someone on Facebook has contacted me and it seems he has a VX engine harness. Now i just need to find the o2 sensor for it and i'm in business. Looking to shed pounds out of the car and achieve some hypermilage for less than $1000!

Welcome to the forum!
Glad you located the part. Lots of people get good results with non-lean-burn Civics that age. A VX drivetrain swap will just be icing on the cake. There's lots of motorsports crossover here: people with weekend toys who focus on MPG during the week. Plus there's similarity in the challenge of honing driving skills to squeeze maximum fuel efficiency as there is in getting ever lower lap times. When you say you're aiming 50 mpg, in what context? What type of usage (speeds, traffic etc.)? |
I take weekly 160 mile trips (round trip) out to my sponsor. Mostly freeway speeds around 65mph on average. I figure with a properly running lean-burn motor, and some clever aero I should easily achieve this.

Yup, sounds reasonable. Looking forward to the details.

Just hoping I'm able to secure the harness and o2 for less than $250.

Well didn't pan out. The hunt continues....

I'm not sure if this helps but a couple of years ago, well planning my build for my Toyota Yaris I stumble on the K&N website for O2 sensors, the was a cross reference to the Prius O2 sensors. You might try looking there.

I would, however as of right now I don't have the proper wiring harness to attach the wide band to. So now I'm having to look up alternatives to get this engine running somewhat acceptable until I am able to secure the proper parts.
Otherwise I will have to change plans on engine and swap in my B16a2 VTEC engine. Which requires a clutch and flywheel. Thanks for the input though, just seems I'm losing the battle of finding the proper harness. |
