Bug Shields

Do bug shields affect gas mileage?

SVOboy 07-15-2008 10:50 AM

They never look to good for airflow, so probably. I would do a little tuft testing to see how much of an affect they really have.

How about the air flo simulator?

If the shield causes detached/turbulent flow, then it's not good.

As Ben says, tuft testing is the best way to find out. The simulator may give you an idea as well.

If you're really worried about it replace it with paint protection film.

Find a Professional Installer

XPEL Technologies Corp.: United States and Canada Dealer Locator

It's an 8 mil thick "clear bra" that is almost invisible when professionally installed. Plus, other places like bumpers and rocker panels and such can be covered with it.

Good advice, darkdan.

Unless Dan's talking about the giant vertical bug deflectors meant to keep the windshield clean.

darkdan 07-15-2008 04:10 PM

Nope, it's applied directly to the paint. It's a "clear bra". Shouldn't change the .cD at all.

It's not cheap, so obviously it's not for us that drive beaters or older cars. But the owners of new cars should be interested in it to prevent rock chips, bug damage, sand blasting, etc.
