A/C delete question

I am looking at changing the serpentine belt on my Ranger and not using the A/C compressor. This is an easy change as the belt routing allows for this. My question is should I disconnect the wiring to the compressor. If I don't will it damage the compressor if I turn the cooling selector past the A/C setting momentarily? Also, doesn't the compressor run when you use the defroster? I know that trucks without A/C have defrosters but it seems like I can hear mine engage when I defrost my windshield. Is there really a significant drag on the engine from the belt going around the compressor and not being used?

Thanks

I want to get rid of my a/c components but I need them to defog the windshield sometimes. There is parasitic drag on the engine from having the belt on there but it's not significant at all (I think)- you probably will never tell the difference.

Yes, you should remove the electrical connector from the compressor if you plan on doing this modification, although it won't make much difference. Simply disconnect that wiring plug and secure the wire with a zip tie.

Most vehicles do engage the compressor on the defrost setting, but you don't necessarily have to do so. Simply blowing fresh air onto the windshield is somewhat effective, and adding heat to the air makes it even more effective.
