Can I break into the top 100?
Still pretty new here, right now I'm #182 with 36.3 mpg #100 is at 42 mpg can I get there in my 99 Camry 2.2L auto?

the real question...Are you willing to do extreme aero mods like 2000neon?
http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...ods-20741.html i say yes you can |
I think the question is not can you, but when will you?...
|
I'm going to say no.
...unless you spend many hundreds of dollars and a few months' work on extreme aero mods and hypermile like your life depends on it. You'll have to really think about how much you're willing to modify your car and change your driving techniques. Getting a tank over 40mpg is one thing, but bringing your average up to that is very different. You'll have to be getting much higher than that on the freeway to balance out any city or suburban driving. Every MPG higher is a little bit tougher than the last. I don't mean to discourage you, but I had reached almost 90% over EPA in my "Anal Probe" and it was a LOT of work. It's going to be very difficult in an automatic, too. Learn how to drive efficiently, mod, mod, mod, but also just be realistic about your goals! :) PS- buy a stick shift |
EPA on your Camry is 20-23-28. At over 36 average you are just about at the limit of capability with your vehicle. My EPA on my Fiesta with an AT (automated manual) is 38 highway, compared to your 28. Your driving environment may be better than mine or worse but you will need everything to be perfect, driving environment wise, to get near 40 MPG. Most AT cars max out at 50% over EPA combined, which is where you are right now, or just a little above. 24X1.5 is 36 and that is where you are, give or take a fractional amount.
I wouldn't let a number drive your pursuit of great mileage. I did my normal trip today and in 40 miles I was showing 55.5 MPG which is probably closer to 53 actual. Todays trip was exceptional for me with many lights green that would normally not be so, just lucky today. I peaked at 57 MPG (indicated) just before I got caught by the second to last light inbound at 19 of 40 miles. regards Mech |
Thanks for all the replies guys. My first goal is to break 40 then do it consistently. I've never had a stick shift car lol. Yeah aero mods are next thing with technique as well I really want a scan gauge!

if you look in the garage piks you can see the dam material on the undieing POS. its old conveyor belt; not heavy, very tough, free, did I mention free?
I made side skirts out of it also and they hang low rubbing the ground with 4 adults inside doesnt cause any probblems. I screwed directly to the front fascia but my car is POS so I diddnt care about a few holes. Belt width is 12" and it is semi rigid. I still have about 38 feet. and will get more in next year or so. Welcome 2 it but I dont deliver. |
