Car Styling Magazine issue 142 1/2

Hello -

My wife got me this for XMas, first published in July 2001 :

http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-cf...ar-styling.jpg

It uses a mixture of cartoony images mixed with real data from real cars :

http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-cf...ing-format.jpg

Here's an example that shows the benefit of wheel covers :

http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-cf...eel-covers.jpg

And here's one that shows the benefit of (partial?!?) wheel skirts (*with* wheel covers?!?!?) :

http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-cf...eel-arches.jpg

164 pages of aero-fun-madness!!!!

Yeah, normally I only buy them for presents for my nephew because he wants to design cars (I carefully stare at them until wrapping them).

My wife got it here :

Automotive Aerodynamics/Special Volume 142 & 1/2

I am going to get another copy for my nephew's birthday. He loves the monster performance cars and the JDMs, so CRXs and aerodynamics are where we meet on most car stuff. I keep asking him to find the name of the guy that designed the "Edge" inspired last-gen Mercury Cougar. He just rolls his eyes and shakes his head.

Oh you lucky guy. I guess you won't tell us which Santa to write to next year?
(And the crowd yells) More pics!!!

SVOboy 12-31-2009 11:29 AM

We demand more! Also, it's bilingual? That's interesting.

Yes, every word in Car Styling is translated into sets of Japanese-English paragraphs. In the pictures I have attached, I cropped out the Japanese paragraph to save space.

Do you have (access to) a flatbed scanner?

Yes, but I don't want to crack the binding. Sorry. I know you can scan without cracking the binding, but it's still hard to scan the inside pictures. Maybe if someone else ruins it, or it gets dog-eared, I'll do it. We'll see.

Bring it over to my house. 10 minutes after you put it in my hands, I guarentee the binding will be broken and pages will be falling out. Then take it home, scan it for everybody, keep a personal file, and everybody will be happy. :D :D :D

LOL! Superman #1 would be safe. Now an issue of Mechanix Illustrated where Tom McCahill tested, oh, say, the Austin Healey 100 or the '55 Chrysler 300...

It's a Japanese Magazine publication. I can't find an ISBN number. Like I said, it's available here :

Automotive Aerodynamics/Special Volume 142 & 1/2

Here is their e-mail :

I'll bet you said whisker because it has a catfish look to it. I think the proper term is "strake". Here it is on the Ford Probe IV :

For me, they look like toy boat hulls, so I have kept my eye out for them in Toys R Us, ;) .

It's a magazine/book. There's too much to try to post everything. Here's the picture I said I would post for Old Tele man and thatguitarguy :

Thanks for posting the images.
This magazine is just the sort of aero information that I enjoy - lots of pictures and less of the math that you usually have with aero manuals.

( BTW What was the cost of the magazine ? )

IRONICK 02-10-2010 06:30 AM

Hello cfg83, did you have more interesting pictures from the book?

MetroMPG 02-11-2010 01:29 PM

Thanks for maintaining this thread, Carlos! Good stuff.

cfg83 02-11-2010 02:47 PM

IRONICK and MetroMPG -

There are too many pages to take pictures of. What I am doing is reading aerodynamics threads and then looking in the book for explanations that "fit" the issue in the thread. I am keeping all the pictures in this album :

Fuel Economy, Hypermiling, EcoModding News and Forum - EcoModder.com - cfg83's Album: Car Styling

No more pictures?

Otto 10-30-2010 02:32 PM

Carlos and others who've posted underbody and nose aerodynamics pictures and drawings, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Please add any- and everything else you can, as the underbody area of air flow and drag is the most target-rich part of virtually any vehicle, in terms of greatest potential improvement at smallest cost.

Next week the election will be over and there will be scads of Coroplast signs available for our use, for free.

I'm especially interested in under-nose and bow wave effects as they relate to oblique flow against the front wheels/tires. I suspect this may be the draggiest part of most vehicles, and your posting of whatever studies have been done will help greatly in improving this area.

Anybody here done tuft testing under nose and under car near front wheels, and can post pics at, say, 60 mph?

RPM 11-07-2010 06:00 PM

They seem to be out of stock. :(

cfg83 11-07-2010 11:08 PM

Hello -

Sorry for not updating this. Too much life stuff going on these days. I think(?) I got lucky when I ordered it because I have been unable to order subsequent copies. I wanted to get one for my nephew but I couldn't buy it. Yup, out of stock. Rats.

CarloSW2

MetroMPG 11-08-2010 06:04 PM

If you ever do find that they're available again, would you let me know? I'd like one for myself.
