Car totaled - what do you think of this one for sale ?

A good friend of mine had a car smash into her this morning. This is the first car I came across, but the " AS IS " is a huge turnoff.

2005 Mazda 3 Hatchback | used cars & trucks | Markham / York Region | Kijiji

$ 1,600 ?? Something is very fish about that.

What's your opinion ?

What is it with the cheap Mazdas ? Are they junk ?

I guarantee you there is something seriously wrong with that car. A 2005 for only 1600? Yea, right. And they just replaced a bunch of stuff, why not fix the belt noise? Ignore this one and move on, definitely a scam.

Every used car sold by the owner should be considered as-is, they just happen to state it. Prices seem way too low, very fishy. The fact that the 6 is still available after a couple weeks at that price points to it being a complete scam, a hunk of junk (looks alright in the pics), or something like "$1000 down and take over my payments".

The thing with super cheap cars is that they generally end up needing a lot of TLC that ends up making them cost more than buying a solid car in the first place, especially if you can't DIY.

What's the budget, and is she looking to make payments? Stick or auto? Coupe or sedan, or SUV, etc?

There are about 2,500 cars in the Austin area on Craigslist priced between 2,000 and 5,000 dollars right now, you're sure to find something.

Austin area ? Oh poop. I knew these cars seemed too cheap to be true.

She actually lives in Toronto. ;-)

Actually, no worries guys. She will wait this one out. I think she is going to go back to riding the subways / taxis.

Budget is .....under a dollar. ( Or 'Toonie' )
She is flat broke, living at home with her ailing parents, and doing a unpaid internship while studying nursing.

So lower the better.
Luckily, the guy that hit her was not a hit and run driver. I hope his insurance / her insurance helps sort this mess out. No injuries as well.

No one hurt then? Not fixable? I drove a '52 Ford for 3 months as a total.

It sounds like she was in a rough position before she got hit.

When I saw the thread title, I was concerned for your shark-mouth-and-spiral-hubcap paint job.

She was approaching a stop light and slowing. The guy sped around the corner and slammed into her, driving right into her lane.
She was driving a tiny little Toyota Echo hatch. Both airbags went off and she is lucky it was not worse.

As far as my own car, I think the visibility of the car actually makes it safer - or so I hope.
