Carpooling really does work

I know this is a no brainer but I thought I would share the savings from me and 2 co-workers who are now carpooling to and from work.

We should have done this earlier since all 3 of us live within a mile of each other.

Me: Acura Integra @ 32MPG (I hypermile so this number could increase)
Co-worker 1: Nissan 350Z @ 21MPG
Co-Woker 2: Dodge Truck @ 13MPG

Round Trip 30miles : 150miles a week
Before:
Me: 4.69Gal @4.20 = $19.70/week
CW1: 7.14Gal @4.30 = $30.70/week
CW2: 11.5Gal @4.10 = $47.15/week

After:
I Drive: 4.69Gal @4.20 = $19.70/week
(-)1 sports car on the road
(-)1 truck on the road
Total savings per week $77.85 or $311.40/Month

If I charge them $10/week to drive we all save big time.

Another interesting thought is we are now buffered if from some reason gas prices were to double or triple overnight we would still be ahead of the game compared to all of us driving our own car.

That's a great illustration. I'm betting there are thousands more "new" carpoolers with you on the road this summer.

Good comparison. I carpool with my wife. Saves roughly 1.5 gallons a day, and thats by not driving a car that gets 55+ mpg!

I am carpooling with a co-worker, too. We share the gas:cool:. If more co-workers join my ride, I may earn some money:D

The driver probably should not pay equel amounts of gas unless everyone helps chip in come oil change and maintenance time.

I wonder if there is some kind of tax credit or something from carpooling. Anyone know?

Good job silverknight with the savings info explained very well:thumbup:

I've talked to a couple of folks in town where I live that have about the same commute that I do, but work at different places. Unfortunately, every one of our schedules is so different that I haven't been able to get a carpool going yet.:(

None of us want to be waiting an hour or more before or after work just to save some cash.....oh well, still looking

I have been unfortunate enough to never have a job where it would be convenient to carpool. Public transportation is not available either. Would if I could but can't. :o

But I guess if you have to car pool choose wisely or your wife may not understand the whole saving money thing.
