Cost per mile goes down the more miles one drives. Gosh, maybe I should go back to my 50K/year habit...

Yah, no kidding. :/
Since I drive so little, my cents/mile fixed costs from license and insurance are atrocious. In spite of that, though, I'm right near the bottom of the cents/mile continuum. |
Right now my cost per mile (gas only) is 6.5 cents
Total ownership cost per mile (including total cost of car, license & reg, tax, tag, title, all parts purchased, oil changes and other maintenance parts, and all the gas I have purchased), is currently right about 22 cents, and that drops with every added mile I drive, as long as I don't have to put any parts on it Lifetime expense: 1,000 for car + 250 TTT, 1,200 insurance, 500 in parts/maintenance, 1,500 in gas divided by 20,000 miles equals a little over 22 cents per mile. |
I've owned the TSX 4 years now. Here is what I figure.
Bought for $17,000. Current private party value is $12,000. $5,000 is my 4 year cost for depreciation. Traveled 55,000 miles at $0.11 per mile. $6,050 in fuel over 4 years. $800 in 4 years of insurance. $560 in all maintenance including oil changes, wiper blades, mods, and an UltraGauge. $130 in registration costs. Total $12,540 in 4 years. $3,135 per year. $0.23 per mile. This should reduce as the rate of depreciation decreases, and I remove full coverage insurance. The reason the cost is so high in the AAA report is because it assumes people buy a new car from the Stealership, and then trade it in 5 years later. This is the most expensive way to own a car. |
Note this is from the AAA, the same group that just recently sent a letter to the woman I bought my house from (at my address), inviting her to renew her membership. Seeing that I've owned the place for over 15 years, and she died in '05 IIRC, I think might say something about the reliability of their data collection :-)
FWIW, I'm right at 4.6 cents/gal for fuel on the Insight, using their per-gallon price. Finance charge was zero, depreciation about the same since I bought it used a decade ago. Liability insurance runs about $300/year, or maybe 3 cents/mile, registration is maybe a few tents of a cent... All told, I'm at maybe 10 cents/mile. The pickup has a higher per-mile cost, especially since I drive it a good many fewer miles. At about 13 cents/mile for gas, plus $200/yr for insurance & taxes, it's still only a fraction of their estimate. |
