Cetane Booster - lubricity issues?
Been using Millers eco-boost for the past few tanks - started at a single dose, saw some improvements then upped it to a double dose as directed on the bottle - better still.
I've now ran out of Millers, so ordered some 2EHN as it's about half the cost, and I'm intending to keep going with the double dose. My understanding is that 2EHN is what actually boosts the Cetane, then Miller's (or whoever) add their own fillers, detergents, whatever. So if I switch to just 2EHN is there any risk? Reduced lubricity from adding 2EHN is my main concern. Thanks, Chris |
I was just reading about all the low sulfur diesel fuels and additives today. I was adding power service which is available everywhere diesel is here but now I think I may stop and just use what the refinery is delivering to the pump. I don't know, I want to believe additives do something but I don't see any real laboratory type testing showing they do. My biggest concern is the very expensive common rail injectors but at about $15 per 1000 miles for the additives they would have to add about 100,000 extra miles just to break even. I'm just on the fence.

I have over 300,000 miles on my 91.5 with PS gray in every tank1oz/3ga. lubricity is a known issue with these VE pumps were designed for the normal sulfur content. So if lubricity is an issue with the common rail use a lubricity agent

I run waste motor oil in the tank from time to time. Seems to run smoother that way. I wouldn't buy any additive as the cost would likely not be offset by the reduced wear.

Thanks guys, I'll just stick with the 2EHN then, and not worry about it. As far as I'm aware there's no big lubricity issue with the 1.4tdi engine.

My gut would go with what the huge trucking companies do, if it provides a cost benefit they would use something although maybe not if it caused emission increases. I don't think they add anything. |
