Chevrolet Cruze ECO: 58 mpg (US) @ 55 mph

They don't provide enough details to make a judgement on how accurate these figures are, but...

Driving the Eco: 58 MPG

We were very surprised to see that Chevy's claims are very conservative and that this car can reach a range that is, for a non-hybrid and non-diesel, absolutely ridiculous, in a positive way.
  • Our stop-and-go driving gave us 32.3 MPG,
  • our suburban driving with a mix of streets ended up at 39.8 MPG.
  • Extremely careful cruising on the interstate at exactly 55 MPH resulted in a stunning 57.9 MPG.
  • If you take advantage of the slipstream of a semi-truck (which we, of course, do not recommend), you can easily approach 65 MPG.

That's pretty neat. It's got so many of the doo-dads we've been implementing in our cars that I believe it can approach 58 MPG @ 55 MPH . I am guessing that they are using the OEM guage :

Also, we're missing important info like ambient conditions (temp, wind).

Traffic conditions: 58 mpg on a busy interstate is easier than on an empty interstate, all else being equal ("Corridor effect").

Nice. Looks like some folks were hypermiling, although they didn't use the term. 58 is 38% over 42, which is impressive.

basjoos 02-21-2011 04:41 PM

That 65mpg achieved while drafting gives a good indication of its aeromodding potential which its tall gearing enables you to take full advantage of.

Sularus 02-21-2011 08:49 PM

If only my finances could afford the payment. Maybe after deployment. I don't go over 55mph to and from work. It happens to be a 50 mile one way trip to and from work. It would be fantastic to use less than 2 gallons of gas a day!

Daox 02-22-2011 11:02 AM

You'd be pretty close to that if you just got a used Civic/Corolla/Fit/Yaris/Echo.

The Cruze Eco 6MT is tops on the short list for replacing my Buick in a couple of years. Getting high-40's MPG sounds great to me!

The big economic problem is that it'll take a long time to pay off the difference between a used corolla/etc and a new Cruz Eco at ~$200 in savings per year (~12k all highway miles). When they've depreciated a fair bit in 5-10 years, then the higher mileage becomes more prominent, but until then anything that's well broken in and gets above 40mpg tends to be good enough.

Ok then, let's redo these numbers :

Imagine what an aeromod would do for it. It has a rather high stock Cd of close to .30, so cleaning up the aerodynamics to drop the Cd on the 0.1's should allow you to get 60's to 70's mpg on the highway if their drafting mpg figures were representative.

Fr3AkAzOiD 02-24-2011 05:00 PM

My wifes '05 Malibu dash display is generly 10% over optimistic but my '08 Cobalt XFE is only about 2% over optimistic.

I could deal with the Cruze being 2% optimistic, hopefully it wouldn't be any less accurate then that.

comptiger5000 02-24-2011 06:44 PM

A couple % off isn't a big deal. My built in mpg meter is pretty useless though. It reads low some tanks, high on others, so I pretty much ignore it, other than the instant function when on the highway.

abell75 02-28-2011 08:50 PM

Article on the Cruze. Somebody at GM must read our forum! ;)

If they did, all Cruzes would be the Eco model ...
It's a lot simpler to NOT built the fuel-guzzler version, and built just the Eco version by default.

roadracer380 07-14-2011 12:31 PM

My brothers day old Ford Fiesta SFE got 54MPG with the cruise set @ 55mph resetting the factory "MPG avg" once we were at speed and drive 10 miles. No drafting, on extra air in the tire. Then at 70mph it got 44MPG with the same test. My Metro doest better in the city but the Fiesta is the hyw king. He claims to ave 45MPG combine with light hypermiling

So I believe 58mpg @ 55mph with a Cruize ECO because it EPA's 2 mpg better hyw than the Fiesta.
