Civic 5th gen. speedometer

Our second VX, the 1992, is having the wonky speedometer, this time with only 150K. Last time we went to the junk yard and they brought a whole speedometer cluster in from another yard. Cost too much.

Question: Has anyone repaired these by swapping out parts? I see lots of auto speedos on eBay, but I'm wondering if just the speedo head unit can be swapped between the auto and stick car?

Has anyone had success at just swapping out just the circuit board at the back of the speedometer?

Thanks,
Scott

The speedomoter on my car (92 CX) stopped working twice. The first time it (the speedo needle was totally dead) was a bad connector on the sending unit on the transmission. Some contact cleaner sprayed into the opened connector fixed that problem 180,000 miles ago. The 2nd failure (the speedo needle would respond to speed changes, but was spending most of its time at 6 o'clock on the speedo dial) it was a cracked solder joint at the base of the one of the long connector pins that attach the front display part of the speedo unit to the back circuit board. Reheating the solder joint fixed that problem about 100,000 miles ago.

Solder joints

Those darn solder joints. Thanks for the tip. I'll get into mine and resolder them and hope for the best.

If it comes down to you replacing the speedometer, it can be swapped from the clusters between the Auto and Manual cars. Once you pop off the clear plastic front of the cluster and take of the black plastic cover (where the idiot lights are) there are three screws holding in the speedo from the back. Just swap as needed to your original cluster.

Tom,
Good info to know if I find a cluster from another type of car. How is your new engine doing?

Glad I could help out, there may even be a DIY thread with piuctures somewhere on Honda-tech to help out more with visuals.

The new motor is doing great. It'll be even better once I get the oil pan gasket to stop leaking, lol.

I know this is an old thread but I am having the problem with an inaccurate jumpy speedometer. I spliced into the V.S.S. near the ecu and I think that May be a problem. some of the wires are most likely cut. could I solder that? or try a but joint splice ? I hate dealing with reinstalling that ecu.
