civic pcv grommet

currently struggling with the pcv gromet. its kind of hard and brittle and it doesnt want to come out. and pointers? what will happen if it falls in?

nevermind, i got it. SO for future reference. if your civic leaks alot of oil just above the oil filter and has a bad idle you may want to change the PCV valve, and if the grommet is hard then replace that to with a fresh new one. its gonna be a total PITA to get out but dont lose hope. first pry with a flat head, then try needlenose. if it starts to rip thats fine! the secret i found it to rip almost the whole lip off around it and than sort of push it in and then you can turn it sideways from there you are almost home, just stick your flat head through the hole of the grommet and pull it out and walla! real happy to get that out of the way.

I've used a pair of needle nose vise grips, it also helps if you have someone with really small hands/arms to reach down there.
after 15-20 years that rubber grommet is dry and no longer doing it'sarge job on a large number of civic's, it's also only a $3 part so replacing it should not be a big deal.
For those who are unclear, it's part #3

Well... Last night when I went looking for a grommet none of the stores in town had one for a civic so I grabbed one for a Toyota. It is just a tiny bit loose in there. I'm thinking that I'm going to wrap my pcv valve with electrical tape to make it a tighter fit and put some scilicone sealer in between the grommet and the box. I don't want anymore vacuum/ oil leaks.

Yah!^^^ the ultimate tool, a girl with tiny hands!! My girlfriend is about 4'11 and she has gotten me out of MANY tight situations on my cars. I just don't like her banging up her knuckles and she doesn't quite have the finger strength that I do.

Jakins:
In my experiences electrical tape, heat and oil are a bad mix, try high temp rtv sealant .. its used instead of gaskets in a lot of shops. It can take high heat and oil without failure.

Ok, I'm using high temp scylicone and I just wrapped the nozzle of the valve a couple of time with electrical tape. Not to disregard your very good advice! But I do have the tap outside of any contact with the oil, it is just there to make the tip a little bit wider so the grommet can fit tighter

even from a dealership that over charges the right part is less then $7

Jakins 10-10-2012 11:41 PM

I would have gone that rout right away but I couldn't have my car down any longer. It works great right now. Better then ever actually. I can just go get the right parts at any time.
