Cnn Major Report On Hypermiling Tonight!

WOW...I WAS reading some threads here and had cnn on.Rick sanchez was yappin about the oil crisis and all of the sudden they have this report with miles obrien on hypermiling with wayne gerdes getting 50mpg with his accord and how to use a scan gage and also turning off the engine...They even get a 30% increase on miles o brien's yukon suv when they tried the hypermiling techniques including shutting off the motor!!!This report started at about 1 12 AM pst and ended 12 minutes later. They showed a web page from what they said was started by gerdes.Dont know if that is this site. They didnt mention the site's name.

Actually this whole hour is devoted to high oil prices and they are also showing what people are doing to save gas...Riding motorized trikes, aero bikes, ditching the suv's...Pretty exciting that this subject is getting the coverage it deserves.Pretty exciting.Seems like a lot of people have been broken by 4$ gas.
I know traffic in LA is down noticeably. Not so jammed packed with cars.

I am supposed to go up to the sierras soon where gas is 4.30...I bet there will be few travellers. Will be interesting to see.A lot of business in owens valley will get hurt this summer by major drop off of visitors.

Great Catch. That was probably cleanMPG.com, because I think that's Wayne's site.

Engine Off Coasting on CNN?!?!?!? We're going mainstream.

CNN, eh. Interesting, talked to some reporter there the other day, hope they listened to me.

I wonder how long it'll be until wayne trademarks himself and the phrase "59 mpg in a honda accord"

I checked the cnn website.
The program was called ''4 Bucks, What's Next?'' and will be repeated today at 8pm est or 5pm for west coast. And then again at 2am and 11pm est and pst respectively...

Heres the link to the program and the time schedule:

http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/

The part on hypermiling starts around the 10min mark at the beginning of the show.

i watched some of the program and i must say that it was pretty good overall. one part i have to disagree with is when the person (forgot his name) giving tips for better FE, said to keep tires to the manufactures specfications. he also said to buy tires with a lower rolling resistance. which makes perfect sense. but only inflating tires to the factory specs kind of contradicts what he suggests of the tires. higher psi in the tires would give even less rolling resistance. i keep my tires to the max sidewall on my 08 corolla at all times.

I just now watched the same segment you're talking about; that isn't the one about hypermiling. It's the same old line the "experts" always talk about. Nothing in there about hypermiling, just the basics that every responsible driver should already be (and far too many aren't) doing.

ah. i really wish they would have talked more about hypermiling.

That's the whole problem. People don't want to change, but when it becomes a necessity it's a different story.

that was the end of the report...they did a whole thing on hypermiling with wayne gerdes in his accord and in the reporters yukon suv-granted it wasnt in depth but ...they also showed a scan gage, discussed it etc...it was a decent overview of hmiling and am sure it was an eye opener to many...

I laughed today when a SUV (grand cherokee like one i have) they passed me doing 56 mph then 10 minutes later spotted them up ahead turning into there drive way.. me getting 50+mpg them getting maybe 20 if there lucky at 60mph and getting there 1 minute before me.. they could have gotten there 1 minute later and gained a few MPG by going 55..My jeep looses 2mpg between 55 and 60mph..
