Coasting in neutral in a 54,000 to 85,000 lb vehicle.

So at work we got a new Kenworth T880 with an automated 18 speed manual transmission from Eaton. A weird thing it does is shift into neutral and coast when the grade is just slight enough to maintain vehicle speed coasting. The first time I drive the truck I got over 9 mpg which is impressive!

Yes, heavy equipment operator, but not since last year. I still have the other night janitorial job too.

I guess no one is interested in discussing coasting in neutral.

"Automated manual' an oxymoron?

Last I knew, in a commercial licensed application such coasting was either frowned upon or actually illegal. School bus it is definitely illegal

Yes. And if that's beneficial and legal in such a vehicle, why not in pretty much everything else?

Yes, that would be an oxymoron. But regardless, it's an automatic transmission that doesn't have a torque converter nor does it have planetary gear sets and clutching mechanisms that a typical automatic transmission would have. This one has a single clutch, and the gears don't even have synchronizers. It has to double clutch every shift, up or down, in order to get into gear.

Why would it be different between school buses and other commercial vehicles? I've never read or heard of any difference, and I have a class B license as well as my school bus and passenger endorsements.

What I wonder is if the definition of coasting either doesn't apply to automatic transmissions, or if it's different than what we normally interpret it as. Like, if you're going down a slight incline, and you take 15 or 20 seconds to shift, double clutching, but your speed never varied more than 2 mph, did you shift into neutral and coast for 15 or 20 seconds or did you just take longer to shift than normal?

Everyone else with an automated 16-speed manual?

Sorry, that was a typo. It's an 18 speed. Most of the other trucks have 18 speed manual transmissions.

But if you have 18 speeds to choose from, and at vehicle speeds from as low as 28 mph clear up to any highway speed the vehicle still decides neutral is the best "gear" to stay in, then wouldn't that be even more applicable to a 3, 4, 5 or 6 speed transmision?

Well, yes.

Is there an example of a 4-5 speed automatic manual? In the used car market?
