Cold enough for ya?

It's cold out!

How cold is it!?

It's so cold that I did something this morning I haven't done in a couple of years: I started the car and let it idle for about 3 minutes before driving! (No block heater... yet.)

-32C / -26F

Ecky 12-28-2017 09:26 AM

I moved from the mountains down into the Champlain valley, and it was only -10F when I woke up, rather than ~-20F. Enjoying my heated seats.

Frank Lee 12-28-2017 09:33 AM

-28f recently. The plow has been busy filling in my driveway entrance and I'm like "meh" so I've been snowed in since before xmas. Last time I tried to walk somewhere I found I wasn't dressed for -400 windchill so I've been hiding in the house. There's also 1/4" of ice on the car I don't feel like scraping off.

MetroMPG 12-28-2017 09:33 AM

Lake Champlain area: That's a beautiful part of the world. I've been there a couple of times... but never in winter!

HA! :D

The "good" thing about these temperatures is it's usually calm and sunny out.

I went for a walk before breakfast this AM, and today was the first day my toes and fingers got cold, even with 2 pairs of socks & mitties, 4 layers everywhere else.

Frank Lee 12-28-2017 09:49 AM

I've been P&Ging the furnace... windows are frosted over; can't see out. I keep a glass of water on the nightstand; if there's ever ice in it it's time to pulse the furnace. I haven't let it get THAT cold but I do let it get sub-40 (the lowest temp the thermostat will read out). I tell you what, the tap water has been nice and ICE COLD and cans of soda not in the fridge are just fine. I'm sure the gas company will think their meter is busted... again. They replaced it a few years ago but I don't know if it's because it was scheduled or if they thought it was malfunctioning due to my low low usage.

I've been waiting for peak ambient temps and peak solar gain- that is, when the sun finally does show up- to pulse the furnace so that has been from 1-4 pm.

We had a white chistmas...but currently, it's 4 above freezing. :p

Fat Charlie 12-28-2017 11:17 AM

I feel like a lightweight, it was only 8 below this morning.

With the grille block, I was still able to comfortably take my hat off after 20 miles of driving.

I had to restrain myself from typing something uncharitable just now.

Weather is weird. Portland had snow, but Show Low did not. Mom says she normally has a white Christmas. I think one of these days will hit sixty. Flagstaff must be one of the coldest parts of Arizona and both mountains have good ski resorts, but this winter has been unseasonably warm. I am sorry if winter is a problem for the other 49 states and whatever Canada is, but I feel reassured that winter is performing within specified parameters everywhere else.

I feel your pain (a tiny, tiny bit)!

It's a little cloudy today . . . .

England moaning 2" of snow

Well winter arrived a few weeks back. Soctland just carried on as normal. English just moaned about everything. Plane travellers moaned about ploughing runways and deicing aircraft. Why moan airport and airlines put passenger safety first. Id rather be late leaving than not get there. Had a similar event 10 years ago when i was at vancover airport. 3 hour delay. At 2am but aircraft we were due to board had one of its engines removed. Glad they found fault at ground level rather than 35000+ feet over north alantic. Just cant please people. Scots where stuck on a ferry for 24 hours waiting for a drop in wind speed and waves to dock safely. Their response was we were well looked after beds and food provided. This was on what should of been a 1hour crossing. Go figure that one out.

freebeard 12-28-2017 03:09 PM

Xist — We're headed into the gray season. We rely on it to drive the wayward Californian back South. :)

But it's not. Hereabouts it's sunny and in the '50s. Have to go ride the horse instead of skiing. And got up a bit of a sweat with just a sweatshirt on.

Fat Charlie 12-29-2017 08:55 AM

My cupholder's by the A pillar. The coffee steams, the fan blows the steam along the window, where in extreme cold weather it condenses.

This morning it froze on the inside of the window. After I had enough heat to take off my hat and gloves.

We're hitting 80ºF for NY day here!

You're gonna need explosives to remove that plow bank if you let it set!

There can be something enjoyable about that kind of experience, once you accept that things are beyond your control, so you may as well make the best of it.

I felt that way when there was a widespread power outage for 3 or 4 days due to a massive ice storm many years back. This part of the world came to a halt.

Hmmmmmm..... Explosives...... Heh Heh Heh

Who sez freezing half to death isn't fun?

MetroMPG 12-29-2017 03:37 PM

Yesterday I was driving behind a not-a-cube-van-but-bigger type of truck going up a steep overpass and it slowed and chugged to a complete halt just before cresting the hill. I changed lanes and went past, but I assumed it was cold-related.

I've been seeing lots of tow trucks giving jump starts and flatbeds taking cars away, too.

freebeard 12-29-2017 03:41 PM

Explosives...

My thought was a flame thrower. And start on the downhill side so it drains away.

Frank Lee 12-29-2017 03:41 PM

It's all because the autostarts didn't work!

Fingie 12-29-2017 04:38 PM

i have given a couple jumps already this winter

ksa8907 12-29-2017 05:17 PM

It's not quite as cold here. Was all the way up to +20f today but has been +/- 10f from 0 for the last week and supposed to be around -12f in a few days. My mileage sucks!

RedDevil 12-29-2017 05:57 PM

Here up north at 52 latitude... 12 Celsius is expected for the weekend. PLUS 12.
But I'm prepared.

2017 could end up being Miami’s hottest on record
By Brett Clarkson Staff writer
"It was a steamy year in South Florida — so toasty that 2017 could end up being the hottest on record in Miami, and pretty close to that in Broward and Palm Beach counties."

So few degrees cooler would be nice. :)

Frank Lee 12-29-2017 06:43 PM

I will set up a fan in the yard blowing south.

nemo 12-29-2017 07:49 PM

Thanks, so much better.

Xist 12-30-2017 12:17 AM

I finally took the Graduate Record Exam. I left Show Low at 9:30, got there at 12:30, and my fingers were too cold to type as furiously as I wanted for the "Write as many words as you can for thirty minutes" section.

So far, I scored higher than my friend, but he did not study, and he scored 98th percentile on the essay section.

I never looked up snow in Flagstaff, but the news just showed their ski resort. They are making their own snow. It was curious to see bare trees and greenery in the background.

Another day out riding the horse in mid-50s and sunny, when I should be skiing instead. Poor guy has his winter coat (we think he has some woolly mammoth in his family tree), so he gets all sweaty.

In my best Johnny Carson imitation voice:

Q: How COLD was it?

A: So COLD the doorknob frosted over!

Gasoline Fumes 12-31-2017 05:01 PM

About 7°F here and I'm sweaty from shoveling the driveway. Still snowing, so I'll probably have to do it again tomorrow.

ThermionicScott 01-02-2018 02:23 AM

We've had a few nights in the negative teens (°F) here. In contrast with previous years, I'm trying to ride my bike all throughout the winter, so that has meant my last couple rides of 2017 were in the negative single digits.

Burning 3/4 cord a week trying to keep this small house warm. just is not right.
