Color opinions: Car Engine brackets
What color do you think looks best for engine brackets? I will be using black as well as whatever "we" decide for the main color. The transmission and engine are aluminum so there will be an aluminum silver color as well.

If you're working on a John Deere...
|
'Black makes it disappear.' Else, 'fake chrome' powder coat.
|
I just realized I didn't mention I would be using this for my car.
Here are some pics in the day light. Taken on the hood of the car. https://ecomodder.com/forum/member-m...2-dsc00932.jpg https://ecomodder.com/forum/member-m...1-dsc00933.jpg freebeard, do you mean like the center caps from my Civic thread? Powder coat on right, original chrome on left https://ecomodder.com/forum/member-m...5-dsc00751.jpg |
Engine bays get dark quickly IMO. Black certainly makes things disappear. I would go for a lighter color. Racing blue would be better than green IMO.
|
If you can find a color that would look good while matching or complimenting your car's exterior color, I'd go for it, but otherwise I'd use a chrome powdercoat (if you plan on keeping the engine bay clean) otherwise I'd probably go with black. But I'm a bit more of a boring person in terms of my opinion on looks so don't mind me. :D

Yes, but I didn't know powder coat fills dents. |
It doesn't. The right one only has the rust issue. The left one is clean, but has those dents in the face of it.
|
That was the joke. :)
I suspect you could bump dents and fill with lead and then powder coat would hide the work. |
You can still buy body lead?? I thought everyone used a bondo style compound
|
I didn't know if powder coat likes Bondo.
Anyone who's seen World's Fastest Indian will know where to get lead, although IIRC it is a tin-lead alloy. Eastwood company sells it. |
Powder coat ovens run at 450 degrees, but that doesn't mean the parts get that hot. Bondo degrades around 300 IIRC. I remember the powder coater we used being really fussy and bead blasting everything because body fillers contaminated his oven and fubared up following runs
I was suprised that one could still actually use and buy lead bars anymore. I know my fishing weights are steel, I cant buy decent solder, and the Washoe health department is pissy about repairing my 75 year old house. |
Most powders "flow out" at 450 degrees. Then you decrease the temperature to 400 degrees until the powder sets. Usually 20 minutes.
Flow out is when the powder goes from the dull powder look to when it melts and bonds together. Before flow out https://ecomodder.com/forum/member-m...5-dsc00927.jpg After flow out, which is pretty much the end result in regards to color. https://ecomodder.com/forum/member-m...04463476-n.jpg I have read that you can use things like JB weld that are rated for those temperatures as an alternative filler. |
