Converting 4wd to 2wd hybrid?

Not sure it this is doable with ratio's, transaxle, etc. But what a way to go. I mean you could easily use regeneration in this system.

I think Lexus or or one of the auto mfr's did something like this... But not for driving, it was used for traction control....

great idea put motors on all those shafts
remove center section of independant rear
install double shaft motor with over running clutches in shafts
eliminates all rear gear losses
old subaru would work great

I'm not sure the image does say it all. If this is architecture is derived from something AWD like a subaru, the engine supplies power to the front and rear differentials through a third open differential (drawing on left). For example, if you just took the central driveshaft off, you end up with a freewheeling flange (for the rear diff) and the front wheels wouldn't get any power.

If you put an electric motor on the open flange (drawing on right), you'd be pushing power from the motor through the centr diff. you'd have to have the ICE and electric motor delivering torque at the same time in order for the car to move. If the motor was delivering more torque than the ICE, I think it might actually turn the ICE backwards.

If you welded the center diff, it might work as you envision.

Didn't the high school kids in Philadelphia build a car similar to that?
