Converting Infiniti I30 to EV?

Hi!

Brand new here - lots of interesting info.

Anyway, we've go a '96 I30 in great shape that we still really love, but it's FWD.

I'm sure it's possible to convert to electric, but can anyone tell me if it's lots harder, 'way more expensive than a RWD car?

Thanks in advance for putting up with a noob!

actually, you would need some 300zx rear end or such to convert it, and possibly having to reconstruct the center tunnel unless the car was made in awd or rwd configuration.

It's somewhat of a heavy car thoo, but may allow more weight. What happens is that you cannot make it heavier than the original weight + payload else it may not be legal in you state/country.

But since its a nissan, a whole lot of transmissions are advailable as well as rear ends. It IS possible to convert it, but its not for the faint of heart.

Im in the process of designing a AC motor drive for EV, so who knows i might offer kits to built yourself one day :p

edit : I may have misunderstood you so ill answer the question the second way i saw it. It is not more difficult to make a fwd ev than a rwd one. Electric motors are small, and most engine bays allows for some more widht. I do have the inpression the i30 is a automatic, that would have to be changed thoo.

You don't necessarily need to convert to RWD to have an EV, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

However, I would be worried about the overall weight of the car.

I have a 300zx rear end for Sale right now. If you come get it it will be nearly free. if I have to ship it I'll have to charge you a little 4 it.

edit:
The main advantage to RWD Ev's is in coupling the Engine to the dive shaft. if you can go transmissionless it becomes super easy in a RWD.

As i said, you dont NEED a rwd for an ev, but its easier if you want to ditch the transmisioin as another poster said. It might be more enjoyable to drive to you thoo.

BUT, on the other side , if you use a FWD, you get the center tunnel to put battery in, and thats a nice spot .

weight weight weight is the issue, you need to have a good 900 pounds allowage in payload, else you need to strip some. And the lighter the more range it will have.

DC vs AC is what you need to look into. the best ev use AC, they get a lot more range and regenerative braking. DC are a joke to put together thoo.
