Corvette Goes Mid Engine

Is this a surprise, or not? Is it too late to matter?

Corvette always seemed like the bargain sports car to me, and some of the past examples have returned pretty decent fuel economy. I'd maybe have been tempted as a midlife crisis purchase, but I'm not quite there yet, and I expect EVs will soon be the bargain sports car. I mean, the fastest version of the Model 3 is nearly there. The Model S has it beat.

A bit of a surprise but not the first time this has been proposed. I think this is a done deal. Market offerings by other companies are driving the update.

I can get a felony speeding conviction with a Metro. Not sure what I'd do with Corvette performance.

Sure, if you go by the American standard of 0-60 and 1/4 mile times being the only defining characteristic of a 'sports' car.

Other stories stated this generation of corvette may come with a PHEV version

As I say, I'm not ready for a midlife crisis car yet (probably never will be), but expect EV to be more appropriate by then.

Cars don't really thrill me. My midlife crisis vehicle would be a helicopter or something at least that dangerous.

They must have needed to add more bolts to the driver's seats so they didn't end up in the back! :p

I've been looking at Mustangs and I-6 BMW's lately. and I'm only 27. Funny what happens when you finally surpass paycheck to paycheck life.

freebeard 07-23-2019 11:14 AM

The only way it will change my life is watching them go by on the road, so I appreciate that the overall proportions are so much better than the front-engine Vette/Viper style.

redpoint5 07-23-2019 12:00 PM

...and the only way it will change my life is if I buy it used 10 or more years later. The newest vehicle I've ever bought was my CBR. Bought it in 2003 as a 2001 model for nearly half the MSRP. After that my next newest vehicle was the 2006 Acura I bought in 2010 for half MSRP.

I'm the same way with all technology though. My wife's cell phone is a Pixel XL, which can be had for $90 these days when the latest one goes for $900. I'll get her the latest one... in 2 years when it's $90.

*Looks at the ridiculous Fiat 500 Abarth in my garage*

Still got 43 mpg round trip to work today. Even after nearly redlining it twice in each direction.

High MPG is a way of life, you can just choose your weapon more carefully and for more categories when you have more disposable income (note, I bought mine 5 years old and for less than $8500 with 59k on the clock. By far the lowest mileage, most expensive vehicle I've ever owned LOL).

There will be NO manual transmission available in the mid-engine Vette! I'm never buying one!1!!

(The above statements may or may not be causally related.)

Last Vette I was in was this 11 year-old 500 hp monster:

Aesthetically the C1 is beautiful, and I think the C7 looks good too. I'm wondering though, are all those grills and openings functional on the C7? I see a grill, hood vent, vent just forward of the door, and an opening near the rear wheels.

The Civic type R looks ridiculous with all the faux plastic vents.

I'm not sure about the base C7 Stingray, but with the Z51 package the rear fender intakes and hood vent are functional. The hood vent is pretty slick--it's fully ducted from the radiator. I don't remember if the front fender vents are functional or not.

jcp123 07-24-2019 11:49 PM

I maintained that I would only believe it when I saw it, since GM has teased those panties since ~1970. But it’s here now. I think it makes sense for the brand, and frankly a change like this feels less rippling or disturbing than the Mustang going IRS.

If Lotus could build supercharged Evoras at the price of a Corvette, we wouldn’t think of the Evora as anything less than a magic exotic car at a magical price. But Chevy builds the Corevette at a bargain price with passably good quality, and genuinely good dynamics (Z51 bargain, anybody?), and folks dismiss it as just more GM muscle trash.

Can’t say for sure and won’t take a minute to look, but I remember overheating issues in supercharged Corvettes, which touched off a storm of seeking out more and more cooling opportunities in these cars, so it wouldn’t entirely surprise me if vents were functional vs not.

Vman455 07-25-2019 01:36 AM

Yeah, I think I remember the front fender vents being actual vents on the Z06 at the Chicago show this year, but I didn't take any pictures of them so I can't be certain.

What GM really needs to stay profitable with the Corvette name is an SUV.

That's what the Porschephiles all said! Now 99/100 Porsches sold are SUV's.
