Diesel fired coolant heater Hydronic D5WSC Water Heater Non plug-in preheater.

I've read oilpan4 build link inspirational. The 5kw only helps when the frozen motor is running(can add a 12v pump @aproxamitly 125usd) and a has a 220v plug aka only works at home(this would cost aproxamitly $200 to install a 220v plug out in drive way) or .000005% of other places . That was fine when I lived in Washington/Portland. Now in Montana, having a failed cold start in the woods can be fatal. You are the one who inspired me to dive into setting up non plug-in pre heater as many communitys in Montana are off-grid. The 5kw block heater would require very expensive solor /battery upgrades , I live in town now but plans are in the works for moving to the country. Plan ahead...
Ordered this :

D5wsc 24v manual ,pdf.

Eberspacher Hydronic D5WSC Water Heater 24v | eBay and a 12-24v dc-dc converter $500usd.
Aready had a battery isolator (was to set up a dual battery/ alternator disable system on a previous gaser) , I will be adding a 2nd battery to preserve the starting battery, and give self jump capabilitie.

Any suggestions on additional tags?

Pros
.10gal/hr diesel 3A 24VDC 72W =5KW Hydronic heat + residual ehxsost heat under hood. Most report operating temperature reached in 15min =.025ga fule 18Wh

Will report my actual

During summer the additional battery will allow a altnator disabling switch.

At home I can just plugin a 5A 12V 60w battery float charger at night to avoid 2nd battery.

Can run multiple heating elements ( trans cooler from wrecking yard add a 12 V 5W fan for cab heat parked engine off)

Nomore waiting for heat after a snowshoeing hike.

Cons:
Price 1800usd new with instalation kit got for $500 Ebay
If I can maintain my summer milage ROI should be short.

Extra battery $100+isolator $94 ( needed any way a single battery is almost not enough with 750W stock blook heater pluged in over night @ -30 took 30min idle and 18mi to reach thermostat opening temp).

Cannot be run inside a "tightly sealed grange "
For now not a problem as I have street parking.

Original idea was an instant hot water heater running propane and a 12V pump. Theas heaters are flow activated. So a check valve/isolation solenoid would be needed to prevent heater activation from the engine.

Dreem big chisel down to reality.

I've only read the first page of the other thread.

https://www.google.com/search?q=+Eberspacher+evtv

EVTV like the ceramic heater in the Chevy Volt; I think it heats water and not air. The link points to blog posts and videos about controlling it with an Ardiuno.

OEM parts available in your nearest junkyard. I forget what they pay, maybe one-fiddy.

That kind of looks like the small Diesel fired air heaters we use in our trucks to dry out our tools. They are also used to heat sleeper units on semi trucks, so they don't have to leave the big Diesel running for heat at night.

gumby79 10-21-2016 11:50 PM

That is exactly what this is the Hydronic/ hot water version. Mt 5.9 isn't exactly a big diesel. But old technology, with no computer to help by programming a warm-up sequence.

There should be a military version for the hmmwv, taken from surplus they should be dirt cheap but it's going to be 24v powered.

slowmover 10-22-2016 12:56 PM

Gold standard item. Hard for me to justify cost in south central US, but it's the right way to go, short of a similar and cheaper substitute.

Webasto, Bosch or Eberspacher also makes those. Popular here in the North

me and my metro 10-24-2016 11:37 AM

Webasto is what we have at work, troublefree heat.

The Eberspacher unit I ordered is a 24V . My truck is 12V so to solve this problem this was also ordered :Waterproof DC 12V to 24V 3A 72W Step-up DC-DC Converter Regulator Boost Module @Power Regulators & Converters

Where were and witch modle the HMMWV with the aux heaters were used in?
. I was stationed at Ft Riley, KS . The only cold start aid was Either and it was on 5Ton and up. No block heaters . I was responsible for 3 5-tons 2 HMMWVs all but 1 5ton would crank up @ -15 without Either ,just double glow (cycle glow plugs ,turn off, cycle glow plugs , start a trick I learned on tired 285,000+ mi Uhaul ford E/F 350 trucks they needed doble glow at +29°f) some of the insert boxes (ambulance, macanical, Como) had auxiliary heat for stand alone use with out the truck .

I have only found pieces of the fuel burning hmmwv coolant heater on ebay, mainly the oil pan that has a port and passages to allow exhaust from the coolant heater to be used to warm the oil pan.

gumby79 01-29-2017 03:27 PM

I found the HMMWV artic heartr installation TM ( technical manual) however it did not show any oil pan components
I'll kep digging the TM speeks of a previous model of heater being removed to facilitate installation.

Maybe they were take offs.
I saw them on ebay back around 2009 so they could all be long gone by now.

gumby79 01-29-2017 08:40 PM

Found the parts you were talking about.

This may be it ...pg 118 Figure 365. Arctic Kit, Pan Cover and Heater Tube.
Part #A looks to be what I had in mind
The predecessor the previous TM was uninstalling was a SWINGFIRE HEATER a type of pulsejet.

Look what I found on AliExpress
Phone Gsm Remote control + (5KW 12V) water liquid heater for diesel /gas engine of car truck van bus! Webasto heater water type!-in RV Parts & Accessories from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group

Just saw this. The gsm activation looks interesting. Running it eith used motor oil and waste vegetable oil could be profitable.

The price is a bit steep...

I wonder if there is a diy version?

Or maybe a very small generator that charges your battery, heats your coolant with exhaust and keeps the cabin fan running could be developed. While you are burning fuel might as well get electricity out of it.

freebeard 02-03-2017 01:29 PM

5 kilowatts times 12 volts is 60 Amps. Check my math. My living module has a 20 Amp service panel. ???

Why not get a 2nd hand heat pump out of a late-model Leaf and trigger it with a laser pointer from your living room window (for example).

oil pan 4 02-03-2017 01:52 PM

The metric system uses kw as water heating units where north America uses British thermal unit.
It burns gas or diesel for heat. Uses 12v to power the whole process.
5kw is around 18,000btu/hr.

gumby79 02-03-2017 03:07 PM

Teoman .
Thats a realy good price at $ 550 +58 shiping from mainland china to the states. Theas units run above $1000 new +install kit /controler. This one appers to be new. =better dill than my used 24vdc unit.with a toggle switch at 500+ a 3 amp dc-dc.
As to diy from first post:

If you have power available at evry spot you stop an electric instant water heater and small pump. Googal has 21 choices under $200 evan a 115v at $89

Your math is close you forgot the fuel ...72w + .11 ga of diesel /gas / kerosene = 5kw is correct you see diesel has over 139000btu . 1w = 3.xx btu.
Leaf heater
?How many 50# groop31 batteries aer required at $125 ea??. to heat 4galons of water and a 1000# engine from 40 below 0°fto operating. And start this engine? (Keep in mind that a battery has only about 5-10% of its CCAwhen new at this temperature ... lithium battery is not able to be charged till spring so lead is the only option. . Getting the math wrong is a fatal mistake at 40below.+windchill...

freebeard 02-03-2017 04:35 PM

I ass-umed it was all electric. And I forgot the heat pump would require a boost circuit.:(

And... it's a space heater. I keep forgetting some engines require water.

teoman 02-03-2017 04:56 PM

0.11 galons per hour PLUS electricity for the pump seems excessive to me. My car consumes 0.8L per hour when it is idling (0.2 gal) and it produces its own electricity, keeps battery charged etc...

Never switching the car off would make about 10L per day.

Something like this to heat the car and charge a lot of batteries would be a better option in my opinion.

I looked at the air heater types . But cab heat is secondary to being able to start.
This is a Hydronic heater . AKA boiler set for no steam production. The 200°c reported ehxsost gas temperature im planning to use as well
My loacal Snap-On truck has the air type to keep the tool room warm . I was not impressed with the output. 20° above ambant with the truck heater (engine running) assisting (on full blast.). Driver said it bearly holds 40° f.
Last night @-10°f parked for 2hrs it took 10mi to achieve 140coolent
IAT 2 above , turned on key 5° (heat rising off grid heater) fire now its showing -1 max was 40° f pulling a 1 mi grede average was 28-32° on interstate in town 10-30°.

gumby79 02-03-2017 06:58 PM

.0374ga 10-20 wh of battery for a theoretical 15 min each time i start my truck Vs 750w block heater 24/7 or burn .5 ga per hr 12gal a day. to idle for months.. + no idle laws ..

An air cooled12 hp diesel $1200 ($300 +$900 shiping)Now if it will start and proform at -40° f/c add a genset head a diesel with no load is a cold diesel
An apu ( auxiliary power unit) for Over the road trucks is a better idea imho heat, cool, power and the ability to sleep(air cooled diesels are very loud)

Update

Went to set up a test . 5 gallons of water ~34°f and was going to time the heat transfer and fule consumption. But the included "$200"doseing fule pump was not sent. So instead of running the device I disassembled it to function test each component separately.
It was listed as "Brand New" . Rust stains, diesel soot, and a locked up water pump (was easily freed as a single component, but would likely have burned out if left alone) indicate a miss leading listing.

Forced air fan checked out
Limit switches checked out
The glow plug was able to exceed 500 °f (the high limit of my IR temperature gun) in 30sec on a 12vdc1200ma wall wort power supply.
Called the Manufacturer and they said the way the wiring harness was setup, "the on-bord controller is most likely fryed". They have the diagnostic wire jumped to ground.
And that this particular unit is a military specific unit with classified parts listing. (read some parts not available to joe public)
Waiting on a response from the seller.
Most likely the system will be returned.
I've seen other 12vdc heaters listed for less $
