Diesel same price/cheaper than gas out here

Passed one station out here, regular - 2.19, diesel - 2.19. Then I get to town and regular - 2.19, diesel - 2.17.

First time Ive seen that since I was a kid.

Yup, I'm saving over 50% in fuel costs over our Elantra with the TDI right now.

87.9 a liter here for gas, and 76.9 for diesel. If the arithmetic in my head is correct, you could buy eight liters of diesel for the price of seven liters of gas. Expressed another way, diesel is over 12% cheaper than gas.

I use "cheaper" loosely, since that 76.9 works out to about $2.89 Canadian for a US gallon, or US $3.39 for the same US gallon -- 56% higher than today's price in Toledo.

Now I know where the expression "We're getting hosed" comes from...

When I was younger I remember diesel always being less than gas, like 40 cents less. Once the big price increases started, diesel became more.

In about the last month or two I notice diesel has come down to where it was the same as gas. Now gas is going back up (20 cents this week so far), today I noticed diesel is less than gas again. $2.29 for gas and $2.19 for diesel.

It's not exactly uncommon to see diesel drop below gasoline in the summer (I hope I'm not just stating the obvious) With an exception for last summer, that's been the historical trend... Remember, we're talking national averages - your local values speak nothing to actual trends.

U.S. Gasoline and Diesel Retail Prices

The last time diesel was cheaper than gasoline was in July 2007. The time before then was July 2006 and the time before that was oddly, September 2005.

Just for fun, I just plotted the difference in price for gasoline v. diesel (all formulations of both).... There's a fairly nice cycle... Since '94, diesel has averaged 6 cents more than gasoline... Since 2000, that average is 9.2 cents. I'm curious to see what happens in the next couple years - it looks like it's stabilizing, but we can't predict the future :p

I can't remember specifics, but it was at least 3-5 cents cheaper than gasoline.

Somewhere around 2.30.
