The very least an armchair enthousiast can do is quoting a serious source when challenged. But someone must challenge. Although they should be prepared to do so, you can't expect people to back their statements upfront everytime they say something.
On a somewhat related subject, I think that the more people ask themselves the questions "do I really need to post this?" or "is this useful?", the better the quality of an online forum is. Sadly, as communities go mainstream the balance between people who often refrain to click the post button after they've written a reply, and those that will post any random sequence of letters, is almost always thrown off in the wrong direction.
