DIY plastic domes
3 Attachment(s)
I decided to try to make plastic domes by gluing a cd-cover to the open end of a tin can and sucking out the air through a check valve, after which i heated the plastic with a heat gun.
My conclusion is that i need to use a larger diameter can and get better at heating evenly with the gun. I plan on covering my non aerodynamic foglights with these. |
Interesting, but I'm having a hard time visualizing them on a car. Got a pic of yours? My first thought is just to use the flat plastic piece and leave it at that.

Cut out the bump, put it on the front of a flat fog-light. At least, that's the impression that I am getting.
It must be the teenager that still lives in my head, but that third pic looks.... mammalian. :D -soD |
Well that "tit" you see in the picture isn't the final version that goes on the car, i only plan on curving them a little, because the bumper is very strongly rounded at the fog lights and the damn things stick out a little bit, so that a flat piece won't fit.

with a plastic CD cover, I would be worried about it cracking when it gets hit with a rock. I have had more than one CD cover break due to flexing.

Your project is right along the lines that I have considered tackling. Please keep up the good work.

Very creative :)
A friend of mine once worked at a plastics company Link below. If the heat doesn't work out to your satisfaction they have clear balls that could be cut in half to fit your needs... I'm not overly concerned about rocks, partly because the raw material is free. (in fact, it's better than free because it reduces garbage)
