Dodge turbo diesel programmer/FE tuning questions?

I have a Smarty S06 POD programmer with REVO for my truck. It has tunes in it ranging from half stock power to +170whp over stock plus ability to run 1-100% of any tunes power. It also has the ability to adjust timing, fuel rail pressure, torque management, wastegate on/off, tire size adjustment, and 25-250mph adjustable speed limiter. Should lowering the power output causing it to be under more load be more fuel efficient? Testing now running +30whp tune and 25% power output. So far have noticed higher load on motor, no smoke, slower boost climb, and less overall boost. Will see how this helps/hurts mpg but curious on what in theory it should do.

Hi,

Thanks for doing this; I keep seeing mag articles and ads that loudly proclaim both power and mileage boosts, it just sounds too much like the holy grail. I'd like to hear what's up from an honestly curious skeptic.

More power and fuel efficiency can be obtained under the right conditions however those conditions will be different with each tune, vehicle, driver, weather condition, ect.....

I know in cars that people add turbos to or increase turbo psi, they need REAL tunes and the programmers aren't safe. But i have always herd the opposite for diesel trucks, so I'm in for the answer.

Keep your boost as low as possible and your EGT as low as possible. My buddy has a Smarty and loves it. Not too many people out there hypermiling their full-size diesels.

Once my '03 6.0 gets out of the shop, I'm trading it in for a 5.9 24v. Got my eye on an '06 quad cab long bed 4x4 2500 SLT with a manual tranny.

Ok.....running 25% power did not help any however running the +30hp tune with timing, more fuel rail pressure, lowest torque management setting, and wastegate off is looking good. Just did 23.69mpg with very inconsistent and varied driving techniques/styles implemented along with unfavorable driving conditions. I feel that I can do better with this same tune and may try the 1/2 power tune to see how it does. Time will tell.....

There was a few of us got round and round on the subject of tuners on a CTD:

The "stock" tune in my truck gives me less mpg than the current +30hp smarty tune I am running in "nearly" the same driving conditions so..........? "Stock" as in factory tune and the "Stock" tune in the smarty programmer are both lower in mpg along the lines of 1-2mpg difference..........?
