i'm new to the site, and would like to know if downshifting is either helping my fuel economy, or is it hurting it?

Welcome to the site...

It all depends on how far you need to go without using fuel. Many vehicles cut the fuel injectors during downshift, over a certain RPM.

The most efficient process is to coast in Neutral (with the engine off, if you're bold enough -- practice first :))

There's a balance between the 2. Good mileage, BTW...

Best to ya...

thanks, my mission is 32MPG out of the ranger, and 30 for the vette, but that might be a lost cause because the vette is an auto... also how do you get the banner in your sig?

I can set up your FE banners if you don't figure it out.

As far as downshifting - I wouldn't worry about it too much as a fuel saving technique. Rick's right about fuel cutoff, but it's much less efficient than coasting in N with the engine idling. The only time I'd do it is down some long, steep grades to descend where you need to keep your speed in check.

Generally, the most efficient way to slow down, from best to worst:

- in neutral, engine off
- in neutral, engine on
- in gear, engine braking
- regular brake
