Thought the EV crowd might appreciate this. Get the batteries and charger sorted out for your project, then use them for your welding tasks (with a pair of jumper cables) :)

I think a battery can't be a good MMA welding source since the current isn't limited. I've read MMA welders need constant current while MIG/MAG welders need constant voltage. So, a battery may be a good MIG welding supply.

mma = manual arc weld, it was invented in 1888 (according to a web source)
it is primitive enough to think of this means to get it done. I watched vid and noticed transformer is one speed, no variation.

If to cheap into welding chores, go for modern mig with ".25 inch capable" specs, and avoid big brand names (as vid shows, they are that simple TRULY). This idea is clever however. Also with mig, you get an 18 volt instead of 12, I do not trust the home made one shown for this reason. :thumbup:

I weld with a battery charger most times, but I don't weld much, as I'm not too good at it.

For structural welding, not a good idea, probably - but for basic stuff, where only a good penetration is necessary, or "get me home" welding, it's probably just fine.

This is what I used for my coupler. Very good with thick metal... but dont do it with thin ones.
