Eco... ...classics?

There is a Honda Insight up for auction on Bring A Trailer. The site typically handles cars, trucks, motorcycles, and even car parts, of interest to enthusiasts and collectors. I found this to be an interesting addition!

It might already be starting to get some collectible value, not just due to its tech but also because it's nearly 20-years old by now, and most cars at that age are turning into a rust-bucket. OK, it has an aluminium body, but whatever...

Wow: "7K-Mile (!!!) 2001 Honda Insight 5-Speed"

Hemmings magazine did a profile of the 1st gen Insight as a "future collectible" last year... lemme see if I can find it.

46 mpg! Something is clearly wrong with it. Run away!

Doesn't it make sense now? :D

Well, due to the rising prices of some older cars traditionally more sought after by collectors in my country, some folks are turning to comparatively newer ones which until just a few years ago were still considered nothing but a beater (even though most are still being used as such) and calling them either "neo-collectibles" or "future collectibles".

I'm sure you could get 46MPG with a perfectly working Insight with bad enough driving.

It could also suggest a lot of idling, that's taken into account in lifetime mpg.

The comments are great! A lot of current and former owners. Plus a guy who is almost finished with a very interesting full EV Insight. I found an earlier article about it here.

https://gas2.org/2013/07/15/ev1-hond...00-mile-range/

The guy is selling this Insight because the Insight community encouraged him to 'preserve' the car and he started feeling bad about driving it. Now he is inheriting a fire truck (!!!) and will no longer have garage space for the Insight. You can't make this stuff up.

I think "classics" cars in general will lose their charm with the coming generations. The less people out there who care about a certain thing means less of that thing will be collectible. Even as time passes say a 1957 Chevy will go out of interest as nobody is left alive that always wanted one and now that they have the money can finally buy one. Oh there will always be a few. Also unlike say the 80's, 90's and into the 2000's even, cars by most opinion were getting worse not better. So getting something from the "good old days" was popular. Now it seems I almost always dream about the future more so than the past. Basically everywhere, not just cars, I see people more interested in technology than say artistry and craftsmanship. I'm 48 and do still crave things of my youth I couldn't possess. So no I don't want an old Nintendo system, I had one and played the crap out of it and it's probably in a box somewhere. The new systems are 1000 times better. But what couldn't I have in 1988 that I could have now that I actually desire? I can't think of anything... OK maybe a black Monte Carlo SS aero coupe or an 89 Turbo Trans Am. Nowadays my minivan probably would win every performance category in a head to head with those cars anyway.
