I picked up this beast of a pickup over the winter.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...le-profile.jpg 1980 Chevy K20, aka The Mule. 3/4 ton 4WD with a gas 5.7L V8 and 4-speed manual. It's really a 3-speed with a "crawler" gear. Originally from Arizona, but starting to rust after a few years in NY. :( Not driving it saves the most fuel. It gets single digit MPG towing at 45-50 MPH! The first planned mod is more displacement. A 6.2L diesel V8. :) That alone should get me an additional 5+ MPG. Axle ratios are 3.73. And there's no overdrive. I wanted taller gears until I towed 4000 lbs uphill. I don't think the weaker diesel could handle taller gears. An overdrive transmission would be nice, but they're hard to find at a decent price. So gearing will likely stay as it is. I'll just drive slow. :turtle: It will be converted to run on WVO and I'm thinking about an aerocap. Any other ideas? Is synthetic gear oil in the tranny, transfer case and rear end worth it? I'll be plowing snow with it, so I can't lower it or do much with the horrible underbody aerodynamics. Maybe an airdam? Since I'm planning to use the much smaller gas radiator, a grill block is probably a bad idea. |
I don't think an airdam will do much behind a plow.

What are you going to do with the truck most of the time?

I'll let it sit in the driveway most of the time. It's really just for moving things that don't fit in a hatchback. Could be scrap metal or a whole car on a flatbed trailer. And plowing a few driveways in the winter. MPG isn't really even that important considering how much it will be driven. I just like making vehicles more efficient. I already have the diesel engine, so that's a no-brainer. And then I can sell the gas engine for around $500.

Will you be driving short or long trips with it?

Mostly shorter trips. 0-30 miles.

Sell the diesel, and choose some conservative "performance" parts to make the 350 gas more efficient. Moderate camshaft, dual plane intake manifold, carb, headers, exhaust, ignition, etc will wake up the motor. Small block chevy has the benefit of being dirt cheap, so even aftermarket full billet distributors are low bucks. Air dam or a skid plate during non-plowing times could yield a benefit. I would also look at the back, the rear bumper looks like a parachute to me, what could be done here, to help smooth airflow and decrease the wake? A wide band setup would allow you to tune the carb better then the traditonal hot rodders... "that sounds about right" methods (I am guilt of this too). It could be leaned out during the non plow season, and richened up a bit during plowing to prevent pinging under load. Vacuum gauge for instant throttle feedback. |

Body swap wouldn't make sense in my situation. The diesel truck's frame is pretty rusty and it's a thinner 1/2 ton frame with a weaker rear axle and very rusty leaf springs. Plus I blew up the auto tranny! But it does have 3.08 gears, which would be awesome when not towing. Nobody's going to talk me out of putting the diesel in the 1980 Chevy. :cool: |

If one turned up in the junkyard and I pulled it myself, I'd have it for about $130. But I'd need a different (and rare) transfer case, a hydraulic clutch setup and probably driveshafts as well. So probably $300-$500. And I'd only have a 30 day warranty. If I bought a 5-spd conversion "kit" from one of the transmission websites, it would cost thousands.
But it's still tempting if the parts show up. I'll be revving about 1000 RPM higher than the auto overdrive truck did at cruising speed. But that thing lugged so badly with the torque converter locked. It barely could maintain speed on flat ground. The overdrive with the 3.73 gears would be just about perfect. |
So it sounds like a wash. Sell small block, get transmission parts, keep the 3.73s.

Those old ID diesels will run on almost anything for a while, but eventually parts start failing if the fuel isn't really clean and the right viscosity going into the IP. I remember thinking I would definitely want to use an inline electric fuel heater right before the IP, because others' experiences were that the coolant tank heating system didn' quite heat the fuel enough. In the end, I sold the truck and went back to gas. Nevertheless if you want to modify, make the exhaust as free-flowing as possible (will BBC headers work on the 6.2?), and I remember there's a few different intake manifolds for that engine, one of which is more unrestricted than the others. Run synthetic oils all around and put in a block heater for faster warm-up times. I found my engine ran cold (I did use an external/supplementary oil cooler, I now remember) and I had a full grill block except in the warmest months of the year. Aero mods for a plow/tow vehicle :confused: Have fun with the project, that's the important thing, right? |
The military spec manifolds flow the best, and the exhaust manifolds off the Hummer are almost like short tube headers. The ultimate solution though, is putting a turbo on that thing. Win,win. The thing that kills the pumps with waste oil is the filtration situation and the removal of water and acids from the stock. The Stanadyne DB pumps are pretty intolerant of contamination. The stuff needs to be heated.

Hummer headers won't fit a pickup body without a lot of cutting and welding. Big block headers look close, but I'm not buying a set to see how close. I have the open-plane J-code intake manifold waiting to go on, it's just like the military manifold.
The old EPA numbers for a "crawler" 4-spd 6.2L 4WD are 16 city/18 hwy. The overdrive auto is worth 3 MPG on the highway. The 350 gas with the "crawler" 4-spd is 10/15. From what I hear, the main problem with WVO in the Stanadyne IP is pushing hot WVO into a cold pump. It cools down as soon as it enters the cold pump, and the input shaft snaps. :eek: Many people recommend heating the diesel to get the pump hot. I'll consider electric heat if I can't get the coolant temp where I want it. And of course clean, dry oil is important. I've been researching WVO in the 6.2L for years. I was going to convert the other truck, but never got around to it. I have all the parts. :) |
