Ecomodder NEWB!! would like some advice?!
I currently own a 1998 Honda Accord getting about 25 mpg and a 2006 Ford f150 getting 15 mpg. So I am definitely in the market for something different and I came across this listing on craigslist and wanted to know what you all thought and things too look out for with this type of vehicle.

Does your accord have the F23 in it? If so you can get some decent mileage out of it with a few little changes... I'm aiming for 40mpg hwy in my acura cl (same thing as accord)
|
How can I tell which motor it has in it? vin#? Does it say in the door jam? It is automatic as well!

Buy a stick shift. Buy a ScanGauge. You don't need a hybrid- just a manual with over 30mpg stock and a few mods. Of course, driving habits play a big part in it. So will aerodynamics.
Also, lmgtfy. Accord VIN Decoder The EPA only lists the 2.3L I4 and the 3.0L V6, which means his car must be one of those. Is it a four or six cylinder? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Accord http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_F_engine#F23A1 If it's the 2.3L four you should be able to get low 30's mpg tanks with light aeromodding and some effort at the wheel. |
I know I will get a thousand different responses. What do you all recommend I look for because I am in the process of selling both vehicles.

Hybrids are great, but I wouldn't pay that much for that car.
What do you need your vehicle to be able to do? |
We'll need some more information. What is your budget? How mechanically inclined are you? Do you need more than 2 seats? How about cargo space? Can you drive a manual?
I'm personally saving my pennies for a manual first gen Honda Insight like you linked but they have some limitations and won't fit everyone's needs. |
Budget lets see like to stay under $6000.00 but cheaper the better. I can drive a manual. I dont mind to turn a wrench and I have the ability aslong as its within means. dont need more than 2 seats some cargo room would be nice i tend to carry a backpack and a gym bag 95% of the time as well as by passenger. my work commute is about 60 miles which as of now is 2 days a week from my house to town/school is about 3 miles one way
my accord is a 2.3 BTW |
Just start searching CL for Geo Metros, Honda Civics and CRX's and Toyota Tercels. Add "-auto -automatic" to the search query to keep out the riffraff. ;)
(Don't forget Geo's were sold under the Chevy name later on) This looks nice. http://lexington.craigslist.org/cto/3396136582.html Quote:
36/44 mpg |
Favorites on this site tend to include the lean-burn Hondas (96-00 HX trim and 91-95 VX), the Geo Metro and Honda CRX and Insight. Off-the-lot, a Prius is a great buy for a new car.
The Geo will set you back a lot less than a clean Honda. The Civic VX/HX are capable of getting gas mileage relatively close to that of a first-gen Insight if driven carefully but have the advantage of having back seats. Sounds like your cargo requirements are quite minimal and most any car should satisfy them. I think a really awesome car to have would be a 2nd-gen CRX with a D16Y5 engine (Civic HX) and VX transmission (the tallest D series tranny) but making such a beast would be rather involved. |
also start fine tuning your driving habits starting now!! there is a driving tip section if you didnt see it already. i took the time and read over it before i even joined this site. very good tips. if you find a vehicle that the other forum members suggested do a little bit of research on this forum about the vehicle. get to know the nature of the beast and its pros and cons. there is a wealth of knowledge on this site and the ones they suggested are fantastic choices. its a lot of fun. after a while i would watch new car commercials advertising 35mpg and scoff. i would be ashamed of my car if it got 35 mpg :)
