Hypermilers Push the Limits of Fuel Efficiency
Hey: Red's famous! http://www.wired.com/images/article/...er_jmm_016.jpg It talks about Red's goals for his rejuvenated Insight: Quote:

I'm really impressed at how well-written the article is. Metro's right -- no sensationalism and just the facts. Great stuff!

I agree, pretty well done.

Congrats! With all the work you've done on rescuing the Insight, you've earned it! (The rest of youz guyz too) CarloSW2 |
The comments below the article, on the other hand, contain the usual number of typical knee jerk "anti-hypermiling" responses.
|
you are so right, as soon as I saw them I wanted to post on here!

I don't know why so many commenters immediately assume that people who drive for efficiency are unable/unwilling to recognize when some techniques may be disruptive/discourteous for a given situation, and so not use them.
They seem to imagine anyone associated with the term "hypermiler" is pulsing & gliding at 35 mph down a 2 lane 55 mph highway at rush hour, ignoring the 7 mile long line of cars behind them. And drafting on the glides (the cars that manage to pass). And then taking the curves in the road at the limit of traction... |
Its all the wonderful other articles that paint us as 'dangerous drafters and holder-uppers of traffic'. Its something different and people don't understand. When they get a bad explination thats all they have to go off of until someone sets them straight.
|
"And then taking the curves in the road at the limit of traction..." in elementary school zones. In the rain. With the wipers and lights off, to save energy.
|
This actually isn't the first one I've seen of these around the web about us here. Hackaday had a post on their blog about us as well.
Great article though, reading now! P.S. I love this comment Quote:

Thanks all, it was pretty cool. Out of all the comments I do love this one

It is funny how they all moan and groan and I'm slowing starting to see more and more people do the speed limit or less and more for sale signs in the back of truck windows. Change is coming to all |
I would not worry about the comments. As of now there are 34. That a pretty low number when you consider how many hits it had.
Nice job Red. The plus is EM got a hyperlink out of the story and the others did not. :) |
Nice article, I ended up reading another. The one about driving 55, I honestly wish we would go back to 55, to me it's more comfortable to drive 55, safer, and more efficient. Somehow, I doubt it will ever happen though.

comment left on wired.com:
"45 MPG from an Insight is an embarassment. My dad has pushed the lifetime average of his Insight up over 60 MPG and can get over 70 MPG on a long road trip. The article is supposed to be about "hypermilers" not idiots who buy a hybrid and drive it so badly they negate all the benefits of the technology." I guess he neglects the fact that the Insight featured was a junker with no life left in it. Good Article, stupid people commenting on it.... |

Try living is Ohio where the car speed limit is 65, but the truck limit is 55. What a mess that is. It's also more dangerous since cars are constantly having to pass trucks.
|
Agreed -- lived there most of my driving life. I remember back in the 80's when the 65 limit came out, truckers would play the "55-Game" in each lane and block traffic. The "Flying Tire Salesmen" put a stop to that.
http://www.odmp.org/patch.php?id=2894&s=150 Ohio has the distinction for the biggest 65 MPH speed limit signs when they first came out: http://www.teresco.org/pics/signs/20...speed65-55.jpg Whenever I come back to visit, I take the limit VERY seriously (more so than normal). I remember one trip, we counted over 30 speed traps along the highway (that we could see!) RH77 Quote:
