Ecomodder's "strange-looking car" Makes the News

http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1463586044

Got one of our ecomodders in the news. This link from my son who lives out there.

The story behind a strange-looking car named Dino - WTOP

Cool! Going to read it now...

Decent write-up!

fusion210 05-13-2016 08:34 PM

One of the kindest and informed articles about ecomodding.

Until you click through to the Consumer Reports article they link to.

But yeah, an outstanding effort from a local... radio station? Hopefully this Michelle Basch ends up going places: any journalist who can do a writeup on an ecomodded car without playing it as a sideshow freak needs to move up.

Ecomodding and hypermiling are still often pointed out as some neo-hippie/tree-hugger deal while it's actually supported even by some conservative/far-right folks aiming to decrease the profits of the terrorism-sponsor OPEC mafia.

It gets even better on the AAA website they link to, where you can find these gems:

"Myth#8: Hypermiling can improve your gas mileage.
False: The goals of hypermiling are positive, such as eliminating aggressive driving and saving energy, notes AAA. Unfortunately, some motorists have taken their desire to improve fuel economy to extremes with techniques that put themselves, as well as their fellow motorists, in danger. Examples of dangerous hypermiling techniques include: cutting off the vehicle's engine or putting it in neutral to coast on a roadway, tailgating or drafting larger vehicles, rolling through stop signs and driving at erratic and unsafe speeds. These practices, notes AAA, can put motorists in a treacherous situation, especially in the Washington metro area, where the congestion and gridlock are the country's very worst. You could lose power steering and brakes or be unable to react to quickly changing traffic conditions, putting you into harm's way in the region's notoriously mind-numbing stop-and-go traffic.

Myth #9: Over-inflating tires or replacing compressed air with nitrogen in tires will improve fuel efficiency.
False: Over-inflating tires does not improve fuel efficiency, tire makers and highway safety experts, including AAA, say. It merely results in tires wearing more quickly and having less traction on the road. Replacing compressed air with nitrogen will keep tire pressure more stable over the long term, but does not improve efficiency. Improve fuel economy by maintaining the recommended pressure."

wow......so nitrogen 'keeps tire pressure more stable over time. (and that's a bad thing......??????)
but a consumer should 'maintain the recommended pressure'
(because everyone knows that normal compressed air alone WILL NOT stay at recommended pressure)

You say neo-hippie/tree-hugger like it's a bad thing.

It' nice to know that others are coming around.

I'm somewhat conservative-minded. I like guns, eating barbecue at least once a week, I am even moderately racist sometimes, you know, my motivations toward fuel-efficiency are not the same as a neo-hippie/tree-hugger's, and it does bother me being mistaken for "them".

Fat Charlie 05-17-2016 08:55 AM

A gun is a physical thing, not a place on any political spectrum.

Enjoying making a tough shot is the same as enjoying geting good mpg- it's operating machinery well under difficult circumstances. Simply enjoying blazing away is childish- the automotive equivalent is a riceboy racing to a stop sign.

Happiness is not a belt-fed weapon?

Fat Charlie 05-17-2016 12:09 PM

It is, but anyone can cut the grass. Dropping a 203 round exactly where you want it is an art.

This could describe me.

I used to pack a .45 and an M-79 grenade launcher with a buckshot round chambered. But I didn't feel particularly safe.

sheepdog 44 05-17-2016 06:22 PM

Only 40 psi? Guy is underinflating his tires. :)

Fat Charlie 05-18-2016 07:58 AM

40 is what I do on my wife's minivan. It helps a bit and makes me feel like I'm doing something constructive, but that's about all.

freebeard 05-18-2016 11:27 AM

The further the vehicle is from a 50-50 weight distribution; the more likely you will run different pressures front and rear to compensate.

MetroMPG 05-18-2016 11:59 AM

Added this thread to the front page.

I don't suppose anyone has a handy link to the Civic's garage page?

RedDevil 05-18-2016 01:11 PM

I did a search and came up with this one:
Details: Dino - 1993 Honda Civic DX Fuel Economy - EcoModder.com

You know there are 806 Civics in the garage right now?

MetroMPG 05-18-2016 01:14 PM

Thanks, RedDevil. (You could have just told me to use the $%@ search feature.)

It's more fun to go for the soft kill.

Ow man. There is no such thing as a soft kill.
The whole kill concept defies the deep respect I feel towards Darin and Tim and all others that keep this site worth visiting over and over again.

As for "a soft kill" I am instantly reminded to that Spitting Image scene where the evolution of the voice of Margaret Thatcher is scrutinized.
In her early years her voice was soft and mellow:

I aptly cannot find a link to that scene ;)

Soft... Indirect... Subtle... Polite?

RedDevil 05-19-2016 11:01 AM

I love subtlety and beer.

Nice little story.

Consumer Reports is very expensive toilet paper.

The "going slower than anybody else on the road is dangerous" line these articles always tow is beyond annoying. I'm always too slow for some jackass that wants to do 30mph over the limit. That's his/her problem.

Fat Charlie 05-21-2016 09:46 PM

1. Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
2. People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.

Oops, sorry, that's for skiers. Drivers don't have any responsibilities.

Xist 05-22-2016 01:02 PM

I insist there is no "speed of traffic." Everyone is different and insists on driving a different speed (over the limit), with a different ability\tendency to maintain that speed. Am I supposed to do my best to drive so that half of drivers think that I am driving dangerously by going too slow and half think I am driving dangerously by driving too fast?

I am at Mom's house, which involves driving a hundred and sixty miles up and down mountains and through canyons. It takes four hours at 55 MPH, although everything indicates my speedometer reads 4 MPH fast. For various reasons, I try to leave early in the morning, but I did not leave until 09 yesterday. I know the HX supposedly usually follows various rules for lean burn, the one I remember is 2,600 RPM, so I did my best to maintain that, which was usually 69 MPH according to my dash.

The speed limit down the canyon is 55 MPH and I was engine braking in third gear about seventy. Huge SUVs were tailgating me around the corners and cutting off everyone as they wove through traffic.

Obviously, I and my 2,500 pounds of Civic were a menace to society!

I'm wondering if this vehicle has any other common mods not visible like a bellypan?

Also wondering why no wheel covers, which I thought were a common first mod and relatively inexpensive for a decent gain?
