A lot of people are of the belief that electric cars are the answer to a green future. That would only be true if the electricity was generated by a non polluting source.Around 65% of north americas electricy is generated by burning fossil fuels. Both the Canadian and US governments have just ruled that electric cars are not zero emmission and the automakers must account for the emmissions from the utility that created the electricty. That and the fact that batteries have such a low energy density is why i am developing the Zoleco as a high efficiency internal combustion drive.

Thanks for posting, Carlos.

Coincidentally, EcoModder is in the March 2010 newsletter. See p. 27. :)

So because electricity is 65% polluting, you're going with a 100% polluting ICE?

The Electric Auto Association is a fine group. They do a lot of great work promoting EVs.

Being a member gets you the newsletter (as either paper or electronic.)
I look forward to getting it every month.

If you are working on your own EV conversion, find your local EAA chapter and go meet them! They will be happy to give advice and encouragement.

PS: Run your EV from your own PV panels, or through a renewable energy program, and your car can be virtually pollution-free. Cars use lots of energy, and we should all cut back use, but if you drive, driving an EV is one way to use less energy, and create less pollution.

My EV is also charged mostly from the wind and sometimes from solar, the big question is, how do you make your fuel?

TomEV 04-08-2010 09:42 PM

My EV is charged from the municipal power company -

Clean sources (84%)
Geothermal 38%
Large Hydroelectric 20%
Biomass & waste 17%
Wind 7%
Small hydroelectric 1%
Solar <1%
Additional sources (17%)
Natural Gas 10%
Coal 6%
Nuclear 1%

Total is slightly more than 100% due to rounding. Additional (less clean) sources listed are generally used during summer daytime when I'm not charging the car...
