EM Garage statistics

So how are we and our cars doing as a whole? I calculated some statistics on all the 193 vehicles in the EM Garage today (except "Electric Cycle", which is way off the charts in a class of its own, which would distort the statistics-- but good job, bennelson!)
Here are the main results:

Here is a histogram (distribution plot; how many in each range of values) of the EPA ratings (maroon bars) and our 90-day average MPG (blue bars).
The EPA ratings range from 12 to 60 mpg, with a median (middle) value of 25 and mean (average) of 28.2 mpg. (The median is less susceptible than the mean to being distorted by outliers.)
Our actual fuel efficiencies range from 15 to 97 mpg, median 29.9, mean 33.8.

The next histogram shows how much we're beating the EPA figures by in percent: range -28 to +86%, median 14.4%, mean 18.1%.

So keep up the good work, everybody!

Great charts! Really puts things into perspective.

Thank you, Bearleener :)

wow, thats really neat!!

SVOboy 03-20-2008 10:09 PM

Great stat collection! Let's keep up the good work everybody...

Perhaps one day the garage will graph these things automatically, :)

Sweet Stats!

Good work

Here are some more stats with EM Garage. This is showing GAS-CARS only meaning I excluded motorcycles and EVs

Interesting compilation !

...those are really some W-I-D-E "error" bands on the AUDI.

Sularus 02-26-2011 11:40 PM

it still looks good

Agreed. AUDI's in the database range from 14mpg to 78mpg. Not sure why the huge difference. I'm going to do some more mining.

Great stuff! I think it would be interesting to see gasser/diesel/hybrid splits where the data is available.

larrydag 02-27-2011 03:08 PM

can you list which make/models are diesel and hybrid? Using regular expression search of the vehicle descriptions only show 8 entries for diesel and 75 for hybrid.

Here is what I have based on current descriptions

...if we had vehicle "weights" it'd be interesting to "see" the MPG-vs.-WT comparisons, which would bring the motorcycle people down closer to the rest of us.

NachtRitter 02-27-2011 07:20 PM

Great charts! How are you mining the data?

I would like to know this too.

Nice job with the data collection.

Gotta feel sorry for all the diesel VW TDIs and Mercedees 500Ds when some dumb guy puts a honkin 1 ton in the mix and ruins the numbers. ;)
Probably the same dumb @$$ that has the 14MPG EPA vehicle too.

I'm using the free and open source statistical computing software called R. I am an Engineer/Statistician/Operations Research specialist by trade. If you are curious more about R and data mining analytics you can check out a couple of my sites.

IEOR Tools Online Store. I have a category dedicated to R programming there.

Also my IEOR Tools blog where I frequently talk about R and other analytics.

If anyone is curious about getting started with R I strongly suggest looking at one of my posts on beginner R.

That is a great idea. I'm still working on getting the detailed garage data.

NachtRitter 02-28-2011 01:25 AM

Sorry, I probably didn't use the right term (I'm definitely not a statistics expert)... What I meant is how do you retrieve the data from the Garage? I can't imagine that you manually download the data for every vehicle in the garage in order to plug into the statistics program...

Appreciate the link to the statistics program R though... I think it has to have a 'www' as part of the link however.

Have you tried other phrases / acronyms such as TDI, HDI, IMA etc etc ? Of course the list could become longer than the list of cars :D

Thanks for the link to beginning R, been looking to get into this for a while.

R has a package called XML that pulls XML/HTML type of documents. It is essentially screen scraping (sorry. I hope I'm not abusing TOS for Ecomodder). All of the data pull, data processing, statistics, and charts are done with the base R or with R package add-ons like XML.

...

You have to pull it from the "Fuel type" input field, but I don't see that in the Garage view of my car. Curious.

Hey Moderators, why aren't we displaying the "Fuel Type" input field in the Garage? Is this on purpose?

Ya, that's interesting... when I edit my garage entry, I see the fuel type... but not when I view it... Seems like that'd be the ideal way to break out the different fuel types in the stats.

MetroMPG 03-02-2011 12:43 PM

That's an oversight. Will fix.

larrydag: no problem as far as TOS is concerned pulling that data from the site. Nice work.

brucey 03-02-2011 01:31 PM

I'd also like to see the averages based on weight. These are really interesting! Especially the Manufacturer/Fuel type one.

larrydag 03-04-2011 09:07 AM

I'm still working on getting the detailed data. I'm about 40% there. I hope to have all of you're recommendations submitted. Spring break is coming up and I will be taking time with the family so it might take a little while.

larrydag 05-27-2011 11:02 PM

More Ecomodder Garage stats after a little hiatus. This is by curb weight.

More Garage stats. Now empirical evidence that instrumentation works!

That's interesting.
Looks like I'm doing well with 3000 lbs curbweight and 50mpg :D
