It seems I'm seeing cars that start when the gas pedal is pushed.

Correct. Auto stop features are becoming more prevalent on new cars. I'm 95% sure its to save fuel. I don't see how it would benefit anything else.

Yeah I saw a GM report that said auto start/stop in the city is good for 2mpg easy in a car.

It's becoming widespread even on Diesels.
