I'm in Europe right now. Where are those fuel efficient cars? 60 mpg van? Imperial MPG MAYBE, if hypermiled on a warm day.

I get a nice 55 (US)mpg from my 2nd gen Insight but I do all the tricks to get there. My colleague has a Skoda 1.2 Greenline 3-cylinder 1.2l turbodiesel, which is rated for about 70 mpg, and gets 40 mpg from it, tops. He does the speed limit where possible.
Go figure.

If there is any conspiracy, it is about setting crazy FE ratings for the European market that cannot be realized in anything but ideal conditions.
FE apparently stands for 'Fairy Economy'.

The difference between the American EPA and European NEDC rating is about 25% for the Insight... I barely break NEDC, I'm obviously a lousy driver

Does it really matter if corn ethanol results in lower MPG if it's source is better than fossil fuel? A car getting 10mpg on ocean water would be incredible!

And I'd love to see VW POLO TDI over here. I'm sure there are better options but I've loved the Polo since Gran Turismo

And a CBR125 or Super Cub.

In other news, the government is hiding aliens in Nevada, the moon landing happened on a sound stage in L.A., 9/11 was a federal conspiracy, and there was a second shooter on the grassy knoll!

It's partially true. Not just because of imperial mpg figures. Most cars in Norway are slow diesels, so my '07 CRV is considered a gas guzzler with it's 150 hp R20 engine and automatic.(average 23.5 mpg, which tbh isn't very good) My previous '03 with the K20 and manual managed around 25 mpg (28 mpg highway) while my older more aerodynamic Ford Sierra 2 liter injection could easily do 30 mpg back in the day, and was still not considered a very econimoc car. The new Civic 1.6 diesel is supposed to do 50+ mpg (averaging 60) in city driving (real life) but is considered to be one of the most economical actually practical cars (the XL1 is hardly a car at all) while still being pretty fast by Norwegian standards (around 10 seconds 0-60).
Americans expect cars to do 0-60 in less than 8 , and cruise the highways at 70 mph. There is just no way to do that economically in a safe, quiet modern car with an ICE.

The second shooter was JFK himself from the future (Red Dwarf!) and sugarcane is a far better source for ethanol than corn.

That article is simply misguided and ignorant. It's rabble rousing at its finest. I feel bad even giving this thread more attention by posting a reply.

The US and Europe have very different emission standards, VASTLY different safety standards and different drive cycles for determining FE.

Another drive-by, carpet bomb conspiracy story from Suspect... carry on, I'm extremely proud of you.

I expect we'll have to wait another 6 months to see another fact-less post by Suspect.

Isn't there some rule about posting the entire article on this forum?
