EV YouTube Channel discovers moon hubcaps

Hello,

I have been a member here a while, but do not post much, but when I saw some youtubers discover moon hubcaps, I had to point them here in the comments.

I suggested ABA hill roll test, but hopefully they will come here and see all the other aero-mods you can do!

Thanks. I see their next episode is on The Boring Company. The test sample of one got their attention with 21% improvement. They noted 4% over a few weeks, a more likely result. Two ways over the same route, is not the same route. They carried both sets of hupcaps but didn't quantify any change in altitude between A and B.

"Here" to this thread specifically? They mention the Tesla aero wheel but don't offer a DIY alternative. Ta-da:

Here is the cleanest open wheel I've seen, the Mariani Farms roadster:

The rim is wider that the tread so that the sidewall forms a continuous curve with the hubcap. Which laps the tire — you can see the 14(!) button-head cap screws at the rim and 8 more for an inspection plate for the bearings. Matched backing plates.

Note the external valve stem caps, the downfall of most full disks.

Note also genuine Moon spun aluminum disks are available with Dzeus fasteners. The stainless steel snap-on (and offs) will weigh twice as much.

They drove the same 26 mile route with each hubcap - which was a 13 mile run in one direction, and then the 13 mile return. It was mostly highway, whereas the daily driving is only about half highway, and they did not measure the daily driving.

No mention of the elevation at A and B.

They sound like Newbies to me. 21% with a set of $75 hubcaps! (4% over two weeks of normal driving)

Neither is particularly rigorous. I have nothing against real Moon disks or Nissan Leafs. SS snap-ons, not so much.

I put snap on discs on my truck a couple of years ago but the usage has changed so much the fuel consumption is not really comparable.

MOONs

Larry Shinoda tested 'MOONs' during R&D of the 1982 Firebird Trans Am,at Lockheed's Marietta,Georgia,full-scale wind tunnel.
*a ventilated flat wheel disk cut drag 0.018,compared to an open wheel.
*a sealed flat disk,0.024
*a MOON,0.027.
*With MOONs the TA has Cd 0.287
*With open wheels,Cd 0.314
*Compared to zero wheel covers, the MOONs give a 8.6% drag reduction.
*And roughly,a 4.3% mpg advantage at best-case-scenario.(highway only!)
