ever reach a happy spot?

in mpg terms.
i drive 130 mile round per work day in my truck.
18 gallon gas tank, 16 gallon fill up, on the gauge is below the "E" on the fuel line. no low fuel light either

so i get 390-400 miles on my 3 days to work (depending on route).
so average fill up is 15 gallons = 26mpg-27mpg.
that is my happy spot. cause to squeeze another day out of a tank is 520 miles on a tank at minium, at 16 gallons is 32.5 mpg.

i dont think my 4x4 is capable of that. best tank ever was 30.5 mpg. i cant hit 29 since tire change and air filter change( amsoil- wix).

so i find my self aiming toward 27 mpg, so i can get 3 days to work out of this thing.

have any of u reached this point?

Personally, I'll probably never be satisfied, so I haven't reached that point yet :)

Do you have an aero cap?

taco 08-28-2009 02:47 PM

1 Attachment(s)
bed cover. no cap would take one but dont know how to build one.

i think frontal area is my truck problem.
that and the clutch fan, i can hear it undernormal cruising.
i removed my lower grill block, but left the piece that connects the bumper to the skid plate, wide as the opening at the bottom.

not a current photo but u get the idea.

I'm actually further from that happy place. I used to be able to fit almost 14 gallons in the Clunker. The fuel gauge would go past the full mark, and if I wasn't careful, it'd spill when the pump shut off, but I would get 525-550 miles on a tank and almost 50 miles before it was down to the full mark. Now when I fill up, it doesn't quite reach the full mark, and I've only been able to even reach 500 miles once. I'd love to be able to get 520 miles per tank consistently, which is 4 complete round trips to/from work. (That means I can visit the same cheap gas station consistently as well.)

My stated goal is to reach a 90 day MPG that is 1 MPG better than my last 90 day MPG. This is usually a year-over-year goal because I need summer weather to build-up a 90 day chunk of good MPG. My other goal is to remain "steady", which also dovetails into why I emphasize my 90 day MPG.

Mine is anything above 60 mpg with "putt-putt". I'll be working on "snowball" next week to see what I can get out of it. I'm hoping for an honest 25 mpg tank.

60 is a phenomonal crossing. I am working towards a 50..that required a weld near the muffler the long way, 3 welds to hold the glow together.
I simply do not know how some folks go beyond on petro. I encountered physics enough to melt a belly pan without a fire and grow iron stalactites on the boxers exhaust manifold bolts.
A metro 3 banging has its advanages.
that is sincerely some serious mileage..even on a 1781cc boxer. I can't even comprehend what inlines are doing with thermal dissipation.

and the toyota tocoma at 28-30 is very disciplined. you even let the tank go below half risking more vapors and fuel loss as it warms.

anyway, to answer the question, my happy spot is 38. plenty safe, and always know there is extra easily with driving habit. If summerish, at least 10more and even 50 on highway is very consistent. Depends on time of year, the happy spots change.

I was just thinking about this last week. I am now averaging ~55 mpg tanks on my work commute (last 13 tanks with 8 over 55 mpg). I was shooting for 60 mpg and came close but that was an excellent week of little traffic.

I concluded that at the price of under $3.00/gallon, anything over 50 mpg would make me happy. I can do some hypermiling but do not have to get drastic to achieve 50 mpg. Once it crests $3.00/gallon I will not be happy with anything under 55 mpg and striving earnestly for tanks averaging over 60 mpg. I know that is possible, it is just a matter of how slow I dare to drive with Raleigh area traffic.
