Ever read scientific journals?

I decided to skim Imgur financial advice again and saw this: https://ecomodder.com/forum/attachme...1&d=1531022113

I do not know how often I want to read scientific journals, but I lose interest when I hit the paywall. Life, uh, finds a way!

Searching on the article title & author(s) will often find a copy posted on their web site. Failing that, if it's something that you do often, many state universities will allow you access as a community borrower.

There is a debate about making academic journals free online, but funding is the issue. Without ads and with small subscription bases, free is difficult to fund, even thoigh authors are not paid. (Remember that researchers get paid by their universities and as part of their jobs are expected to publish research in academic journals with the correct quality controls.)

Also, visit a public university... you can access many journals through their paid databases for free. I would not recommend emailing authors unless you have a good reason for the dialogue. Such an email will probably not get a response.

I read them all the time for work.

They are probably the biggest scam in existence, but they know how to play the cut throat publish-or-perish academics off one another to continue... well, not being relevant, but profiting both coming and going. They charge you per page to publish, and they charge people to download articles.

If it were up to me, everything we publish would just be in arXiv or the like. Screw those rent-seeking jerks.

I cheat -- I only read the FREE "fake" literature (wink, wink)!

journals

I was gifted with a few years worth of SCIENCE,NATURE,and some journal from University of Dallas, which I haven't had a look at yet.
No cost to me.It's the best stuff I've ever seen.
The preambles to all the work illustrate uncertainties and issues, and by the conclusions, they again hammer on themselves as Richard Feynman advocated, attempting to find holes in their own analysis, recommending further research to plug more holes.
Scientific Americans show up infrequently at a local used book store. They're a watered-down version of SCIENCE and NATURE.
I've been told that these publications now publish online. It will be a year or so until I can check it out.

Open science began in the 17th century with the advent of the academic journal, when the societal demand for access to scientific knowledge reached a point where it became necessary for groups of scientists to share resources with each other so that they could collectively do their work. In modern times there is debate about the extent to which scientific information should be shared. The conflict is between the desire of scientists to have access to shared resources versus the desire of individual entities to profit when other entities partake of their resources.
